Do Barber Quarters always go so high?

I am working on a 1899 Mint Set. It is my number one vintage coin focus (my 1891 Mint set is #2) and a 1899-O Barber Quarter, PCGS price guide value, $600, hammered at $755!!

Is it going to be that costly to get this one? My last bid, painful as it was, was $745. 1899-O auction

Yes. Nice Barber halves and quarters, especially MS65+ ones, are currently going for more than the price guides indicate.

All choice certified AU to MS Barber material is selling for well over trends.

I was tracking that 1899-O and decided to wait for an AU 58 with better toning.

That particular eBay dealer has some mighty nice Barber quarter material.

I won a nice 1892-O Ty 1 in AU 58 and an 1896-O in AU 55 from them a couple of weeks ago.

Best of luck on your hunt.

Coins that are in 1st tier TPG holders are going to go higher than trends in any auction. Some retail dealers are also going to be over trends for slabbed coins - a PCGS AU 58 can easily be MS 63 money. It could be that so many Barbers have been messed with that people only feel comfortable with slabbed coins and with so many Barber collectors the competition for these coins is significant.

The other option is to find collectors who do not have their collections in slabs. It takes more diligence on your part, but there are raw Barbers out there which have not been cleaned. So many people want slabbed coins that there are bargains out there for people who are comfortable buying raw. eg - Julian used to sell some of the nicest high grade coins you ever saw and they were raw. Anyway, my AU 1899-O was purchased for $275 this year.

    Good luck.

do not feel bad. all nice coins are getting bids and i am getting
beaten. do not try to compete with the high rollers. they will
over extend themselves and realize, oops, here is christmas
and i need 2500-5000 for gifts. they may have to sell some coins
or really max out those CCs. Either way patience is truly a key
    idea in this coin market.

there will always be more coins to buy down the road.

    Thanks all!

I have been building this set for almost 18 months and this was the first PCGS MS62 1899-O 25c that I have seen. I went to the ANA World of Money last summer in Denver and I didn't find a one. And I have seen zero MS63's.

Anyway, I am patient and will just keep an eye out and will up my pain threshold.

I hope you all have taken a look at this set. It is fully imaged.

    Regards!

    Harvey,

Very nice mint set you're putting together, especially with all the gold.

I'm working on an 1898 set myself, but have no gold - yet.
Sorry, I don't know how to attach a link.
