Build a Bankroll for Coin Show or Always Shopping?

I find that I am always browsing the Internet for great coin deals. Sometimes I snag a few nice coins online, but when the coin show (Ohio Coin Expo in my case) comes around, I come up short on funds! What's your experience?

FYI: Ohio Coin Expo Nov 9th through 11th.

When I come into some money, I can't find any decent coins. When I'm broke, all kinds of good deals come along. Or, so it seems.

I am very judicious with my purchases, so I tend to have the cash available.

Shows are a great chance to upgrade and pare down. As collectors, we tend to well...collect. By any other measure, it could be called accumulating. Kind of like those 5 "Oh, the view" mint issue nickel rolls and the three extra '06 burnished SAE's, and that "problem" coin that you foolishly jumped on. So, take that au58 from your core collection, dump the junk, and get a nice 62 with a little bartering of trade bait for an upgrade. You don't have to have any money, just clean out the closet and all will be well. Accumulating and hoarding is not the same as collecting, they have different definitions. Kind of like using the safe deposit box to store those '06 mint sets and the extra couple of $13 unc SAE's...at some point your box is going to be full of that stuff. Shed the lead and get a nice coin at the next show.

    Coin ON!
  • I refuse to buy coins sight-unseen, with the exception of accepting the word of a few dealers. I am always shopping, however.
  • I will only buy coins at shows, so each month I pull out my monthly coin budget in cash, stick it in my safe, and accumulate enough funds to get me through the next coin show.
