I can confirm that when a cataloguer uses the term "mottled," it's only because the word he's really thinking of is not polite to use around company.
Edit: This is not to suggest that I would call all the pieces illustrated here "mottled." I just know a particular cataloguer who uses the word often -- and typically uses it as a code work to describe a coin whose toning is thick and unattractive. And, to my knowledge, he does not use it to describe classic Mint Set toning, which to my eye looks more speckled than mottled.

POS?
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.
This antoninianus of the Roman emperor Aurelian (270-75 AD) is about as mottled as can be.
It's a pity the "mottling" makes the coin so ugly, because it has pretty sharp details. Also, the mottling in this case is caused by traces of the original silvering, which usually didn't survive on these thinly-silvered bronze coins. So it's an ugly coin, but its being partially silvered is a plus, I suppose. Besides, I got it on the cheap.

He either has a serious skin condition, or he mated with a Spotted Pony.

I agree, the toning is ugly. But the good news is that they didn't cost a dime.

The picture does not do roosevelt justice. He is one colorful dude in hand.

mottled toning
Uneven toning, usually characterized by splotchy areas of drab colors.

Nice choices Lee.....they may have some splotchy areas per PCGS Lingo page, but the mottling is pleasing IMHO.

Hey, the mottled look ain't so bad some of the time!!!
When cataloging, some will use the term "variegated surfaces" in place of "mottled."
