Pack break- 86/87 Fleer basketball, 84 Topps FB rack......

I got my package today from BBCE which included two 86/87 Fleer basketball packs and an 84 Topps football rack box:

image

1st pack- nada, and I mean nada. Best card was George Gervin. and the cards weren't even centered well.

2nd pack- much better:

The Wilkins is a definite 9 and actually falls within 10 standards in terms of centering, but the 86's rarely get 10's even if slightly off centered. I expect a 9 which is about a $175 card. This pack almost paid for itself I think, but the first pack absolutely killed me. I will say that both packs were definitely legit and untampered with.

I was a little disappointed that the 84 rack box was an X out box, but it was clearly unsearched.

I decided to keep opening packs until I got at least one Elway and one Marino. I ended up getting two Elways before the Marino, but I still have a bunch of packs left (PM me if interested at $30 each plus shipping which is what I paid). Centering was typically all over the place, but corners are nice and sharp for the most part.

As predicted, I lost several hundred dollars on this bust, but it was kind of a wedding present for myself, so screw it. A lot of fun. Without divulging pack sequences that I know about (don't want to teach the scammers), I was two cards away from pulling a nicely centered Jordan. I also got a handful of cards I'll be sending to PSA.

Goot- X out boxes are the ones that were sent back to the Topps factory after retail stores retunred merchandise. Topps reboxed them and put a black X on the box and sold them at a steep discount. Basically the packs have been handled more than non X'ed boxes.

Ahman- I'm building a raw set, but I'll let you know if I have any doubles.

    Arny- No Stephenson rookies.

I don' think Fleer basketball has a packing sequence does it? Atleast not one that is consistent. Are you still building a fleer set? LMK if you have any doubles or extras.
  • fleer baseball wax in the 80's had very distinct pack sequencing. im sure the basketball did as well.

Not one that was consistent, but a lot of the packs had cards in order. 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. It's not an "every time" thing, but it's very, very common.

There's an eBay guide about it.

Yeah since lee got 119, 120, 121 in the same pack, but he also got 53 Johnson in the same pack. I am guessing that is how he figured he missed the Jordan by a few. I knew you would get some mini runs in them, but I didn't think there was a set sequencing lke 1989 Fleer baseball.

I guess this can't hurt that much to mention, but there are two alternating numeric sequences in every pack which can go in ascending or descending order. For example, a pack could look like this: 1, 25, 2, 26, 3, 27..... or it could look like this: 1, 27, 2, 26, 3, 25. 1987-88 Fleer works the same way. The catch is that there can be a break in any given pack where the cards are turned upside down and the sequence picks up at a random spot in the set.

Edit to say- If you ever open a pack and there is no rhyme or reason to the sequence, the pack has been searched.

Most of the 80's packs had runs in them, but I honestly think they were "half pack" runs, where you got two seperate distinct runs. First year of hoops was terrible for runs. Back when I was in school, we had Kroger stores which got the big display packs, which I believe had 24 boxes each in them. We got to the first one by accident and saw they were getting them in. We went to 9 Krogers in the Knoxville area that night, spent over $400 on packs, because we knew the sequences. Ended up with over 400 each of David Robinson, Michael Jordan and Larry Bird. Plus because of the sequencing we got 400 RC's of unknowns at the time like KJ and Mitch Ritchmond.

Not my finest collecting moment on pack searching, but heck, I was in college, no job, no money. This paid for a years worth of beer

Thats not the only sequence in the 86-87 fleer box.
The pack below picks up where the pack above it left off or vice versa.

I use to play pack poker with the stuff back in the day and I remember if you picked the pack above the pack your opponent picked you always won unless he had the checklist.

Thats why the more intelligent people that played would empty all 36 packs on a table and mix them all together.

We did at least 3 boxes at the 98 national.

For those who are not familiar... In pack poker. 1 ,2 ,3 or 4 players would each pick a pack, whoever had the highest #'d card in their pack would win all 4 packs.

Not 100% sure if that was consistent with the whole run.

This info wont help anyone since you will rarely ever find a case fresh box for sale.

    Roger-

use needles, much easier than razor blades.
