Side Income and PSA Population Reports

Hello All....

I am been struggling with the concept on how to make some side $$$ with baseball cards. I have been reading all the archived posts and getting a few ideas. However I am still trying to understand how to make $$$ on the population report numbers and the SMR numbers.

I know ebay is the big place to buy graded cards however it seems like more of a wholesale place. I am wondering if their are any folks buying on ebay to sell in another avenue.

I am trying to understand if their is a way to buy/sell on ebay.

I am thinking vintage cards....pre WWII since those cards are noting being slabbed at a large rate.

I am pretty sure that anyone with a fantastic idea will not share it on a message board so I am struggling to understand the economics around how to make some side $$$.

The best idea I have is buying raw collections and parting them out. However in the pre-WWII arena I would image those are hard to find.

Anyone have any techniques or angles they would be willing to share?

Thanks in advance....

Justin

Isn't the problem with selling when you is High is that you can make some really bad deals...

I once traded me mate dangerous dave my car for 20 mcnuggets....

  • I try to buy in bulk and then break it down into smaller lots. For example, I bought this lot of (3) 1972 Topps Wax packs on eBay last night with the intentions of flipping them on eBay in individual lots. I paid right at $400 for all three. I know that I want a minimum of a 35% mark up, so I need to sell them for at least $540, or $180 each. BBCE sells the same series wax packs for $180.00 in a PSA 7, but these are graded a 9. Knowing what these have closed for in the past on eBay, I know that it shouldn't be a problem getting that amount (hopefully more). So that is my advice - buy in bulk and then re-sell in smaller lots.

  • Buy classic cards of players you are convinced will make news, and sell when they are hyped up.

ie - buy prospects before they make a splash in the mlb
buy someone out of news who will likely make news - example arod player of the year, biggio roberto clemente, mvp's etc..

they will always spike when there is news...the bigger the news, the more the hype, and the bigger the profits.
who will make milestones next year?

the more rare, and the bigger $ item they are now, the more potential return.

IE, buy rookie autos, rare rookies, etc...

As for vintage, when someone dies their cards will see a spike....when someone is elected they will see a spike.

Who's next on the HOF list?

I think manny, vlad, and andruw are all good prices right now, but all have huge potential.
  • For the last year I have been buying raw vintage cards at the local shows in NC. I have 2 or 3 particular dealers that I work with. They all sell raw cards only unless they have bought a lot or set with some graded cards included. Then I will send them to PSA for grading and then onto either ebay or to one of the major auction houses. The hard part is developing the eye for the difference in a PSA 7 versus PSA 8 through PSA 10. If you can develop that eye then you can flip and make some money.
