Does this 1807 Bust half look like a altered 1809?

Is there a market for altered coins?

Well, one thing for sure: that is NOT an 1807 half in any way, shape or form. Now, about being an altered date, I am not so sure. It looks like one of the many cast counterfeits that have been floating around. The stars and milling are wrong and it just has "that look", so I vote for fake. Besides, at that grade level, there's not enough incentive to alter a date to an 1807, imho.

THe stars are too big IMHO...they look more like later date stars...

what a load of crap, it looks like a cast that's had the date altered!

  • Yep.

    Another 1807 Bogie.

This coin was discussed at the forum across the street over the weekend.

E-mails were sent to the seller. Complaints filed with eBay.

    The auction went through.

This specific type of 1807 Bogie shows up about every 2 to 4 weeks on eBay.

  • Ed is correct. This is the same KNOWN Chinese Cast Counterfeit. Different seller? Cast originally from an 1809, O-102. Number changed from the cast piece. Then molded again. I have several images of this counterfeit as well as having had the oppurtunity to study one under a microscope and take notes. SEVERAL have been listed on ebay since January of this year. Addtionally ebay has cancelled several of them at auction. Still, they keep popping up. Maybe worth $15 as a conversation piece. Not a contemporary counterfeit type made during the Capped Bust half dollar period.

    Buyer beware!

At least Coinlady sounds honest and admits the coin has been cleaned at the least.

Not to mention she offers a decent return policy.

We are fortunate that the Chinese counterfeiters continue to make sophomoric mistakes. Be it the use of the off center bust from the 1795 DBSE to make 1796's 1797's etc or the use of the 1809 to make the 1807.

Imagine if the crooks simply kept the date 1809. Or, used an 1807 to make the cast.
