shipping to Canada or overseas

Since reading some of the horror stories on these boards I rarely send anything without delivery confimation or insurance. What do you do about things sent overseas or Canada ?

  • For me, the answer is simple. I just choose not sell to those buyers.
  • Usually Registered of Global Express work. I use Global Express, which gives you tracking information and you get signature confirmation when it is received.

I don't know about the quality but I sent a Topps factory set to Knuckles who won my contest - he got it ok.

The kicker? It cost 21 bucks to ship it!!!!

  • Thanks guys. The package I need to mail to the Netherlands is $24 Global Priority with up to $650 insurance.
The card to Canada is worth under $50 so I'll just bite the bullet on that one and hope for the best.
    Thanks again, Rich
  • the only country ill ever ship to is Canada, and then only specific items.
  • That's great if you are only selling sports cards but for older non-sport tobacco cards and other collectibles you leave a lot of money on the table. The European economy real strong right now.

Regardless of which service level you go with, make sure to completely and accurately (ie value and collectables) fill out the customs forms.

I've never had any problem shipping to about 45 different countries.

Two lost packages out of about 500 sent - one to Sweden, one to Canada.

Only other issue I have encountered is that it seems to take forever to get through customs in Italy.

italy is one of the worst, and german customs, i got neg from a guy in italy the other day, whoopie lolimage and a guy i sell alot of military stuff to in germany said customs over there is terrible, flat rate enveolpes go thru no prob, boxes they have to wait forever,i seal everything i send with taped named and dated,so if its opened, they know who did it,i sell to tons of foreign countries, but those 2 are by far the worst, esp italy when it comes to losing stuff ,or the customs guys stealing it, not like ya can do a whole lot about it half a world away if they dont scan it?your stuck

I only ship to Canada and the US. I haven't had any trouble shipping to Canada - knock on wood. The key is insuring your are shipping to a confirmed address. I type all my labels so there is no chance of mis-interpreting the address or handwriting. Do fill out the customs form accurately and as clearly as possible to speed up the customs process. I think many of my items clear customs very quickly because they look very professional in their packaging.

On a side note, I sold a bunch of silver coins a few weeks ago and one guy won some and wanted me to deliver to China. He was also a private ebayer so I chose to cancel the transaction - just too many potential problems! It was worth re-listing and I actually got a little less for the coins, but it was well worth it for the lack of stress and potential for problems.

The European economy is very strong and I certainly would sell to Europe if I had any product that they would be interested. At last glance the Euro was trading at almost $1.45 to the dollar.

  • Hello,

I use a secondary site for adding auctions to eBay that is free to use. It is called Auctiva. Besides being able to add more then one picture to an auction free of cost, there are other good advantages to using Auctiva. Another one is it sells you insurance for out of state shipping at the same cost as USPS within the State. So I use this insurance for more costly items. Plus when shipping items to other countries you can get a Certificate of Mailing for $1.05 from the USPS. It does not give you confirmation when the package arrives, but it at least gives you proof that you mailed the item. Knock on wood, I have not had a problem yet so I don't know how everything works, but I figure I have the insurance to cover the item and the Certificate of Mailing to prove to the insurance company the item was mailed. I hope that is all I need.

I hope this is some help for you. If I am living in a dream world please let me know!

    Thanks, James
