It'll be a short list of clubs with the kind of money needed to land Arod, and the Yanks will still be one of them. Personally, I hope he'll sign with the "other" New York team. An infield consisting of Arod, Reyes and Wright would certainly be very impressive!

    Matt

If mets go after arod and its a done deal. reyes is gone. he will be shipped to the twins for santana in a big trade package.

as a mets fan do i want this to happen? im on the fence.. arod is the best player. reyes is awesome. but to bring in arod. and probably move reyes milledge pelfrey and heilman for santana. i think that would make the mets much better.

i would hate to see reyes traded. to me it would be the only thing that would get reyes traded.

i would love to keep him and stick him at second. he could learn that position easily. i would hate to loose him and his speed.

i dont think sabean and magowan have the balls and power to get ARod. They couldnt get juan pierre, carlos lee or even gary mathews jr last off season even though they outbid or matched other offers...how much more ARod? They instead paid about $20 mil more than the next bidder for a so-so pitcher (zito).

but, then again, in 93 magowan surprised everyone by opening up his wallet to get bonds. i believe bonds was all set to go to the yankees or dodgers and at the last moment the giants swooped in to get him. along with maddux to the braves, likely the best big money free agent pickup ever (maybe man ram in boston...but it seems like boston keeps trying to trade him...).

ARod in pac bell...that would be something else.
  • No way it's good for the Yanks, losing best player in the game can't be a good thing.

Would be a nice fit with the Angels.

  • Yeah, how could it possibly be good to lose the best player in baseball?

The bidding war between the teams involved is going to be furious.

I have a strange feeling he will land in a Cubs uniform.

The Yanks biggest mistake was not giving Torre what he wanted. This could become a chain reaction and as a Yankees fan, it scares the hell outta me.

Im not saying Torre should be the manager for Torre's sake but he should be back for the team's sake.

I agree...and to be in a city where he will be universally loved has to appeal to him, after years of being tormented in an unforgiving and unfair city by arrogant and unappreciative fans.

It'd be a heck of a lot of fun to see him playing against the Yankees in a Red Sox unifrom.

  • I loved what Peter Gammons said last night. Arod has never played in a World Series and maybe there is a reason why. He has no class by announcing this at the World Series and putting the attention towards himself.

I agree it was a good remark - however....

Why didn't they elect NOT to mention it during the WS - ignoring him would have been just as appropriate as Arod not announcing this earth sharttering news at this time.

AROD cant PLAY SS anymore, have you see the size of his ass?

AS A YANKEE fan, i am happy today! amazing since the sox just won the WS!
  • What a complete self-serving a##hole announcing his plans during the final game of the World Series. It goes to show you that all the money in the world can't buy you class. What a total jerk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely classless to make the announcement during Game 4.

Shouldn't come as a surprise, though. From slapping a ball, to yelling "I got it", to playing in illegal poker games, to whining, to cheating on his wife with an Amazonian.

Arod is not the only feature player to stink in the post season....

but he's definitely the MOST celebrated at this point.

    Doesn't he get it?

While I totally agree with all the negativity about Arod stated above I will gladly take him on my Dodger's! A-rod and Torre to re-store the luster in LA! It's just money and it's not my money so get them both!

Arod is a great player - I would take him on my team.

He will definitely help a team to the postseason.

On the cost - and it's not your money?

    Do you go to games?

I've been attending games since I'm a child and stuff costs way more money now - even with inflation.

We ALL pay for this crap - even the cost of a can of Rightguard is affected by the high cost of doing sports business.

Love the game, not the players.

Never has so much gone to so few and supported by those with so little.

Let him go rot in SF or Anaheim where the fans will be laid back and not boo him...heaven forbid, you may ruin his fragile psyche...

    Do you go to games?

No, I can't afford it! image

I realize that you are right Stone... it is "my" money as I do go to games, buy merchandise, etc.... However, I think I have gotten to the point where I accept it as reality. That is, it will cost me a lot of money to go to games no matter what so A-rod might as well go to my team.

In all seriousness I do NOT think it makes sense to sign him as he will likely command 8 years at $30m a season. It makes no sense but pro sports doesn't make a lot of sense.

I suppose all of the above is why I love college sports... and even high school sports, more than pro sports.

I must have misheard. I thought they said that Scott Boras announced it. Perhaps Arod intended for Boras to announce it at an appropriate time...maybe not. Maybe Boras wanted some leverage in the negotiations and announced it when he thought it might get him the most $$. Either way, it's big news and the happiest in the bunch must be the Rangers. Good for them!!

As for the Yankees, I hope there is a mass exodus of talent with the way they've disrespected Torre. The "classy as his father" Hank Steinbrenner had the following to say about Arod: "He doesn't understand the privilege of being a Yankee" as if there's no other teams in the game. I hope Arod goes to the Red Sox and spends the next 10 years earning those boos from the Yankee's unfaithful.

    My 2 cents...

A-Rod has already stated he does not want to play in SF, so that's not a real possibility. I think there will be 2 prime bidders, Cubs and Angels. The wildcard here is if the Red Sox are able to sign Mike "I do it all" Lowell at 3rd base. Lowell (with Bora pushing hard), may demand a multi-year, mega-pay raise that only the Yankees will match or exceed. Should that twist come into play, it is likely the Red Sox may push harder for A-Rod. I'm not sure of the reception in Fenway...Lowell has lots of charisma, A-Rod is too aloof.

As a very happy 50-year++ fan of the Red Sox, I gotta say that the idiots running the Yankees may well have shot themselves in the foot HUGE! Torre's record speaks for itself, his loss impacts players and may have had a substantial impact on A-Rod's decision. Pettite, Posada, Rivera could bolt, and Clemen's sun has set. Imagine being paid $175,000.00 per inning pitched? Obscene!!

Note the timing of the release of the A-Rod story...the very night of the Red Sox winning the WS. Pretty bush league to me. Why the rush, why not today?

    Yankees in deep, deep stuff!

Couldn't agree more, Yanks on the verge of mediocrity, kind of funny.

Find it surprising that most Yank fans are glad to see Arod go, doesn't make sense to me, hard to replace the

    best player in baseball.

I suspect most Yanks fans don't want to see Arod go. Without him the team might not have even made the post season. Yanks fans are simply starting to see the light that money doesn't guarantee a championship. They are also beginning to see value in the farm system as several notables were called up this year: Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy. Colorado made it to the World Series with 28.7% of the Yankees payroll. Boston won it with a big but still $45 million less payroll. Two farm system call-ups, Pedroia and Ellsbury, helped seal the deal. The Yanks veteran pitching staff could be decimated this off season so the $30M/year for Arod is probably well spent on a couple of quality hurlers if any are available.

I got a feeling the Dodgers will make a move for ARod. The team needs some pop on the left side of the infield and probably wouldn't mind spending the money. Likewise with the Angels and an AL park would suit him better. Arod would be well received on the Left Coast. The Cubs may also try to land him though a potential change in ownership adds an interesting quirk. Would the addition of Arods quarter billion dollar contract make the team more marketable or not? The California or Chicago markets will keep the endorsement dollars rolling in. Will see how savvy Boras is with team placement.
