Presidential Dollar Edge Lettering. Gone After 1 Year?

I heard there is BIG discussion about moving everything (In God We Trust, Mint Mark, etc) from the edge of the Presidential Dollars to the obverse and/or reverse and it would start with the James Monroe Dollars.

If this happens, I wonder if the 1st year issues will become semi-rare?
I have all kinds of coins, tokens and a few medals. I'm not a big time Stack's Auction collector. I don't collect for investment or value. When I see a coin I think is neat, I grab it. I collect a few coins by year and mint, like Lincoln and Canadian Cents, Westward Journey Nickels, State Quarters, Presidential Dollars and 2 or 3 others. I have some Proof Sets and Uncirculated Sets. I've been collecting for 34 years, so I have a little bit of everything.

    Is like about 12,000,000,000 rare?

"Semi-Rare" and right now, no. But in a few years.....

the problem with these coins is that they are not circulating.
how does a coin become rare sitting in federal govt vaults in
    mint state condition?

    In about 300 years, maybe.
  • Well I would think that the first ever US Coin to have edge lettering that ended up only being produced for 1 year would become a coin of interest in some way.

what is sorta funny is that the ones with NO edge lettering are
    getting all the interest.
  • Lol. True.

  • These are hardly the first edge lettered coins from the mint, and when the new reverse designs come out on the Sacs, they too will be edge lettered.

I don't see congress getting upset. In fact, the only ones I see that get very emotional over these things are right here on this forum. I'm sure the mint has production quality targets and with the high numbers being produced, the recognized inherent risks in a 2 step process, and the challenges of doing anything for the first time it is likely that the number of errors is well within goals. Sure they'll say that they expect zero errors but they have to have more realistic goals. --Jerry

Sitting in federal govt vaults in mint state condition has created one of the most collectible coin types....

There will always be conditional rarities, as not all of these coins will grade MS67 or better..

All that I have seen are around ms64ish in my eyes...

As a date or type coin, absolutely not. These are and likely will always be common. Condition rarities, as Lucy points out? Probably to some extent but it's always going to be supply vs demand and, though most are banged up uglies out of the roll, there are still a lot out there even at a fraction of a percent.

    1883 No Cents Nickel
    1913 Type I Nickel
    1909 VDB Cent

All orders of magnitude rarer than this year's presidollars ever will be, all extremely affordable in mint state.

Coin World said the Mint is spending Millions of dollars to perfect the process.

I think they should move the Mint mark back to the front. The other stuff I don't care.

After they sit there for a couple of decades the mint may just melt them. And then what would happen to the
value? Do you think they will let them sit in their vaults for a hundred years like the GSA dollars? Don't think
    that will happen again.

Well the GSA dollars are an extreme example but i can easily see them
sitting for a couple of decades if the paper dollar never stops being
    printed.

There is just too many for them ever to be rare in our lifetimes. Save
a roll for your kids to cash in on when there is actual collector value.

I do mean to be "snobbish" but lets face the facts.
  • I don't think that these will ever become rare by any stretch of imagination, if they discontinue the edge lettering at the end of this year, I think the 2007's will be of interest to new collectors for years to come especially in higher grades, as to the "smoothies" I think they will always be collectable no matter what happens, if the edge lettering is stopped at the end of this year I think the "smoothies and the double edge coins will skyrocket in years to come, just my 2 cents............
  • Here's a link to info. regarding possible changes/removal of the edge lettering.

Ok. I had heard these were the first coins with edge lettering to be put into circulation.

    What others have there been?
