1872 Indian Cent- Opinions please!

I bought this on eBay from a blurry photo...it looked like a decent coin, and the price was right, so I decided to go for it. As you can see, it ended up bing a pretty nice coin, mostly. The scratch on the neck concerns me- in your opinion, will it grade with that scratch? Also, what would you grade it at?

i am not sure if the color of the coin from the photo is accurate
so i wont comment on that.

but the scratch should make the coin BB at pcgs. reminds
    me of a staple scratch.

and what is the green stuff on the rev, especially on the shield?
  • I'm not sure about the scratch, I have one similar in a PCGS slab. It seems to be around a F12, tops. Maybe cleaned , surface looks odd, may be the pic.

It's actually a little darker than the pictures show... the color looks good to me.

Kind of a tough one....scratch and color aside, as you've already gotten plenty of commentary on, I think it may technically have Fine detail. The 71, 72's, and '86 TYII's frequently have weak LIBERTY details, with the rest of the coin being 'normal'. That looks to be the case here. If you graded strictly by LIBERTY, as many do, then it's a VG8. But I know the major services are aware of this. I sent in an 1872 with a weak Liberty, all letters present but not sharp, the rest of the coin was sharp and lustrous, and PCGS graded it AU50. I also showed an 86 TYII to ANACS at a show, though more than just LIBERTY was weak on that coin. They said straight away that it probably grades higher than I think, and they gave it a verbal AU55.
So, don't be a slave to the LIBERTY details on some of these indian cents - but also beware when you go to resell, that many in the marketplace may not want to pay up w/o those letters present and sharp.
