1880-S VAM..... What's Up With These Denticles??

I can't find any info or VAM for this..... any ideas from the VAM folks?? Die chips, pitting?? Something else??

Could be chips, erosion, die polishing, ... Can't tell from that image and maybe not easily without an in-hand inspection. Probably not an MPD.
