Is there any way to remove....

....solder from a copper coin? I think the (IHC) coin was previously on a stick-pin. And since they are two different types of metal, I thought there may be a way to remove it??

Heat. Assuming it's standard lead/tin solder it has a lower melting point than the copper.

  • I work in the high tech industry and know there is a simple process to remove solder from gold pads on a printed circuit board. I'll check with the process engineer Monday to see if he believes the same process would work for copper as the base metal. I believe it depends on the reflowing temperature of solder vs copper.

I'm very new to coin collecting, but saw a gold coin with solder on the rim edge in a coin shop about a month ago. The dealer said the coin was worthless because of the solder. I really wasn't interested in the coin, but wondered if "solder wick" would work on the gold coin as well as it works on the gold pads of a printed circuit board.

I'll let you know what I find out...hope I remember.

I had the eMail of a guy who did that professionally. Maybe you can Google it. It was Coin Restoration. He also did plugging. Mike
  • It all depends on how hot the coin got when the soldering was done.
If it didn't get hot enough to penetrate the base metal, then you should be able to remove the solder with a solder sucker or by wicking it.
It's fairly expensive to have a professional remove solder, so make sure the coin will be worth it if you send it out.
    It runs about $175.
This guy does a good job.
    Expect 4 months lead time.
