Comparing it to the two other Naismith autos on eBay, I would say this is definitely not legit! The other two look identical and this one doesn't even look close!
It says "Mrs. James Naismith" because it is supposedly a letter from James Naismith to his wife.
I've seen multiple Naismith signatures, and this example would be much more formal than I've ever seen, but I would say it is almost certainly in his own hand. It's not really an autograph though, because it's not his signature, but his own handwriting.
It would make a good signature cut and I think it would authenticate. Naismith and I share both a college fraternity and Freemasonry in common, so I've had the pleasure of seeing fraternal documents signed by him and have always aspired to owning his signature one day.
Being its addressed to Mrs. kinda makes you think it was someone else. And in that could be the problem, unless there is a letter with it we really don't have no way of knowing who sent it.
<< <i>Was wasen't saying its nto legit, I was just wondering what you guyys think, if its Naismith himself or his wife signing it? >>
Why would his wife be addressing a piece of mail to herself?
<< <i>May be legit, but I am not sure I would call that a true autograph. >>
Interesting, but it could easily be cut up, and all of a sudden, it is a cut autograph. >>
I didn't read all in to it LOL, I just looked at it for a second and thought hey, that says Mrs. LOL. And then I posted here, didn't really look at it long enough
<< <i>Coming from Rich Albersheim, I would tend to believe that he has good evidence to believe that it was written by James Naismith. >>
I love when people say that LOL, if it comes from this person then it has to be real! HAHAHAHA >>
Rich is a respected dealer within the autograph community. His website is www.albersheims.com, check it out. Though his prices are a bit high, sometimes it is worth paying the extra coming from him. And sometimes, like now, he sells on ebay for less than he usually lists on his website. Is it possible that he made a mistake, that could always be the case, but I would take Rich's word over many people in the autograph community and if he was wrong you will get your money back. He and Kevin Keating (www.qualityautographs.com) both are very respected autograph dealers who I have dealt with numerous times and I have always been happy with the results.

Some Naismith Cut that sold on ebay recently
Was he ever out in Denver at the YMCA sending mail to his wife?
He was in Denver in the 1890s finishing his degree so it is possible. While no date on the envelope, the stamp does fit the time period.

Edited to say: I think his wife signed it.
