Seated quarters seem to being doing quite well lately, comments?

I've been watching these of late, both proof and business strike. Both seem to be doing quite well. Many selling for multibles of sheet prices. Comments from the experts?

Nothing new. Sheet prices on better Seated 25c have been too low for the past 10 years, maybe longer. The better dates trade infrequently, and the price guides often lag behind, seemingly "never" being updated. All scarce and rare date Seated is doing well, and some of it is still undervalued. The question is, can you figure out which dates are the undervalued ones, and which ones are the overrated, common stinkers?

Yes my favorite series and one that has been vastly under appreciated. Many low mintage rarities that have seen low demand for the last 20 years. Now a few more collectors are catching on and that increased demand is chasing up the prices.

Many of the rare dates have less then 200 examples known. Those being the CC's and the early S mints and O mints. Also the late P mints coins of the 1880's.
If I say something in the woods, and my wife isn't around. Am I still wrong?

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

Even for the specialists it is sometimes hard to value certain coins in this series, because they are scarce and thinly traded. I rely on auction records a lot more than price guides. It is also helpful to see what is going on in the other seated denominations. If CC dimes are going crazy, CC quarters probably will too.
  • The Seated Quarters are still the most undervalued U.S. coins.

Well as far as the PF64's go they've been around a grand forever......Someday they have to take an upward hit since there's just not that many of them made.

I really like all of the 19th century proofs and want to make a type set.

I've thought about doing this myself, except the gold. Would make a fun set.
  • i believe the dime collectors are tired of overpaying for dimes and see the quarters as a more economical alternative there are very few series that will still allow one to buy the scarcer dates at anywhere near trends

Proofs and low mintage dates aside, I think the No Drapery 38 and 39 issues are also scarce and undervalued (on the Greysheet) in XF and higher. There is a huge spread between the posted sheet prices and what the real market makers, like Dick Osburn, charge for these coins. My guess is that he is paying over sheet prices to begin with.

Better date Seated is going crazy -- over the last year or so people have really begun to realize how tough some of the better dates -- particularly the branch mints -- are in nicer, problem-free condition.

Don't even think about going after nicer examples of better date with "sheet" money. You'll get your ass laughed at, most likely.

Check the prices realized on the latest Stack's sale. For example, EF-45 (IMO) or AU (bidders' opinions) 1858-S quarter sold for $9,775 incl. the buyer's fee! Many prices of the scarce and rare Seated quarters went well over the price guides.

My fav series as well, but business strikes not the proofs, although I do agree that problem free w/ motto gen proofs are very tough, and true no motto gems vastly tougher. So many dates are unavailable as gems, even as 63's, and there is nothing prettier than a gem seated quarter with color... which is why it seems every auction I get the opportunity to bid on one, someone else is bidding right along with me. There seem to be a lot of folks buying them these days, lot more than say 10-15 years ago when it seemed to be a lot easier. I know there are at least a few guys with deep pockets building sets, so as far as gems are concerned, yes, there is far more competition for them.

These are not the coins you're looking for. You don't need to see the pop reports. Move along.

My favorite series of all time and the toughest/rarest silver series from 1838 to present. Nothing comes close imo. I figured once that 75% of the coins in this series are RARER than the 1901-s quarter.
    That's over 75 dates/mints if I recall correctly. Even a "lowly"
1859-0 quarter is rarer than a 1901-s in relative terms with something like 300-500 in existance (and 3-5 gems).

I recently picked up the rarest and most underrated "O" mint imo and paid 3X CDN for it (note: it ain't the 1849-0!)
