1916-D Merc is it real or memorex

The wife is looking to fill her 16-D hole in her Merc album. She is asking about this dime. I told her they faked this dime alot. So here is the question to the merc lovers out there or any one else. Is it real?

If I buy it, it will turn out to be a S mint. If anybody else buys it, it'll turn out to be a D....

  • Man I do not even think acid would bring that MM back up. Wish I knew for sure.

Too hard for me to tell. I can't tell if that is a D or an S in that picture. I would be careful of this auction. Even in the auction description the seller states that he does not know if it is a D or not.

There is a PCGS G06 for sale over on the BST Forum for $1,450.00 I believe. Link

looks more like a D to me than a S, but I wouldn't risk it 'cause I don't see a return policy stated.

I'm like UtahCoin, it would turn out to be a S if I bought it.

For that much money wait for one that is graded. There are just too many fakes to waste your money on.
I feel that any coin worth over $100.00 of my dollars deserves my personal viewing or a professional grades before going for it.
  • Thanks everyone. I agree with the majority in fact concensus here. Two much money for a coin I am not even sure would grade AG and not even sure if it is a D.

    Thanks

It's best to buy these type of key date coins in TPG slabs...

I bought mine in the old ANACS holder, graded VG 8...

The "D" dimes are usually very easy to tell. The "D" mint mark are hammered into the die pretty hard in 1916. I am not saying it isn't real. I am saying I would not buy a 1916-D that isn't certified by one of the big three services.

Acid don't work on silver. Only on nickels.

Perry - Actually, there are many acids that will work on silver, just not necessarily the same ones that work on nickel/copper.

Actually looks legit, but too much $ to risk without certification.

    It looks like an S
  • Ask the seller if it has a reverse die rotation...the one I have does...ever so slightly
  • I have what I think is a 1916D that is very similiar to this one - very hard to see the D, but I feel that it's there - going to a local coin show this weekend to see if anyone can confirm it for me - I guess I could send it in to TPG and see what they say also - any way to ID these types of coins that the MM is difficult to detect besides high magnification?

Putting an expensive piece of suspicious junk in the hole is not a very good solution...
