Keep or trade?

OK I have a 2006 W PCGS ms70 $100 Platinum Eagle. I thought these would be going up in value from the intial $4000 selling price as they seem to be the lowest mintage $100 Eagle yet, but they seem to keep coming down.

So I am thinking of trading or selling it for the best key date coin I can.

What's your opinion? Keep it or flip it into a key date coin?

What do you think has better long term value?

I think it is a buyers market right now. I would hold the Plat for long term. Your best bet would be to see if they are going to reopen sales of the 2007-W Plat sets. If they reopen the 2007-W plats, then I would think it would be a no brainer to hold. jmho

trading is an option... I would consider a nice MS Seated dollar instead of the coins you have listed. While those are key dates... they seem quite available. Check the value of a MS63 Seated Dollar and whether you can get one for what you sell $100 platinum eagle for... keep in mind this is merely a suggestion... buy what you like and have fun.image

  • How about a nice XF45 or AU 58 1922 no 'D' 1C ?

The most important thing is to buy something you know you will like. There is no fun buying a key date coin if it isnt pleasing to your eye. See whats out there that you totally love and buy the key in that series in a grade you can afford and you will be a happy camper image

    Or an MS63RB 1955 DDO.

    This is really good advice.

In general, I think keys are the way to go...and I think they definitely have better long term value potential.

However, you have to enjoy owning the coins...maybe instead you trade/flip for a high grade key date in a sleeper series...maybe a truly rare coin that can be bought relatively cheap because it's not in the most popular series.

I agree, the most important thing is that you buy something you like. I like key date coins, so I would of course trade. But don't trade for the sake of trading...you'll just end up trading again and again and probably lose some $$$ in the process. If you get something you like you can be in it for the long haul.

As a speculation, it's not a bad one - but the Mint's capricious behavior towards its customer base will have alot to do with how this coin performs over the next 3 years. On the bright side, it will never be a "common" coin.

If you bought it purely as a financial speculation, it may disappoint in the near to mid term, especially if your cost basis is higher than it is right now. However, if you like Plats, it will surely be a winner in the long run.
