Your last coin in a set

For you Dansco set collectors - do you find that the last coin you need to complete your set is something that is not supposed to be rare or expensive but turns out to be harder to find than the rarer coins in the set?

Yes. I have a P,D,S,S dansco Roosie dime set that only needs a 1960-P dime. Not rare, but none of my local B&M coin shops have a single 1960-P example for sale.
  • I was working on a Morgan Dollar collection for many years, cracking out the coins from slabs for my Danscos, and eventually I made it to the point where the only coin that I needed was the 1894 Philly, when prices skyrocketed several years ago. I've never completed the project, and may even sell the 90+ Morgans in my almost complete set. Only about a dozen of my most recent purchases are still in PCGS or NGC slabs.

No Mint sets from 1960? Proof sets? Hmmmm, that is strange.

I don't do Dansco but my Lincoln set has been missing the 09 svdb for about 5 years now. That is I've
got all the rest of the set completed since 2001 or so. Since I don't buy coins from shops it may be a while
for me to get one in a collection.

Not a dansco set, but the last two coins for my liberty nickel set were the 1894 and 1898, both of which were almost impossible to find a nice MS-64, it took 3 and a half years!
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

  • I needed a decent 1946 Double Die Walking Liberty to complete my set and could not find one I liked ANYWHERE. I finally traded an extra 1921 Walker for a really nice one from another board member. While the 1921 is supposed to be rarer and was slightly more valuable, to me it was a great trade because I got a gorgeous specimen of the DDR that I simply could not find anywhere else in the grade I wanted. Plus, it had the added bonus of finally completing my set.

Yes . For my buffalo nickel set it was the 1925-D. My only requirements at the time i was putting this set together was that the coin have a full four digit date and be problem free. It took me a long time to find one after the rest of the set was finished. Finally when i did see one in a dealers case he sold it to me for $8.image Bob

Yes... I wouldn't think a nice, gem 82 P & D Washington quarter would be that hard to find. I've been looking for a lonnng time. That includes five Santa Clara shows.

Many moons ago when I put together the $2.50 Indian set finding a 1911-D in 63 was a b1tch. Sure do wish I had kept the set as the '11-D is now worth stupid money in 63 (and it probably would have upgraded to a 64 given todays grading).
