PSA in High Demand and Very Busy

Well, I think it's pretty obvious that PSA is understaffed or overloaded. 2 of my last 4 subs have come in late. The two that came in on time were Walk Through Subs and Super Express Subs. My Auto $20 special was 2 days late and now my 5 Day(approx) is on it's 6th day. I really don't have any problem with this as long as PSA honors is voucher policy. There are a lot of members on this board who have become quite upset with their subs taking 50+ days to return. I know that this question may not be popular, but I'm wondering which of the following the board members would rather have.

#1. Longer Guarunteed Turnaround Times without a price increase

#2. Shorter Turnaround Times With a price increase

#3. No Guarunteed Turnaround Time with a Lower Price.

+50 days????????? What PSA are you dealing with??? Better check those old threads again and modify it to 100 DAYS!!!

    TALLBOY SPECIAL

    09/04/07---day whatever!!

    09/05/07---day whatever!!

Maybe i'm not allowed to b'ch since i got my football special back in 5 days
  • "Hire more grades"

    That costs money.

Does that mean your vote goes for a price increase?

50+ days refers to business days

I am still waiting on my June Special - I sent it on June 30, and it didn't get checked in until July 14th - since then, I've heard nothing.

From your options, I don't think I'd vote for #3 - with a lower price, you'd have even MORE submissions, which might slow down things even more. I'd have to go with #2 - I'd love something that was a little more than the $5 special (maybe $7-8), but was guaranteed in a shorter time.

But I think it has to do with what is in people's submissions - the less diverse the cards are, the shorter it takes. My june Special was all over the board in terms of sets and sports. But you see some of these Football submissions coming back a lot quicker. Why should any of thise be coming back before the June Specials are done?????
  • today is the 5th business day on my $13 koufax rookie submission...unless the day they process it is the first business day, in that case this is the 6th day for me. it says approximately though. so i figure by the end of november my 1 card will be done.

A majority of the monthly specials involve modern cards. I'd lower the current minimum bulk lot from 100 to 50 ... @ $6?

I don't think more graders is a good answer. We see so many cards that have puzzling grades now, what happens when they hire more graders? I don't think there's many experienced quality graders who aren't working, either at psa or beckett or sgc. Seems like the overall opinion is the grading at gai, pro, etc is substandard.

Either psa would have to steal graders from beckett or sgc, or hire graders who need training. If they hire inexperienced graders they would either have to have them supervised (which would take even longer!), have somebody check the grades before they are shipped (which eliminates the benefit of the new graders) or take the chance that the grades are accurate. I'm not ready for option 3.

If they drop the specials some of us will still submit a lot of cards, some will submit less, and some none. I don't think dropping the specials makes many of us run to beckett for the bccg special. Probably cuts down on the modern stuff where a 9 will sell for $5-10, or the vintage people like me send in just to get it holdered for protection. Might slow down some of the huge bulk submitters but I think they pay less per card anyway (deservedly so).

JMHO but I'd rather see less specials/higher per price card than more inexperienced graders. They need consistent grading to keep PSA as close to the top as it is now.

  • Just offshore the grading to India...or China....Cheaper prices

Finally we get the correct answer. PSA can outsource all the grading to India and they wouldn't even have to teach them the grading standards, and the quality would not change. The consistency would actually probably go up.

Are the slow turn-arounds only (or mostly) prevailant with specials? I still haven't used my vouchers from my 3 year renewal. From what I understand vouchers are still 7 or so days guaranteed, unless the policy has changed.

In my humble opinion, standard pricing and monthly specials should be viewed differently.
Standard pricing is on the site. The price, the guranteed turnaround, etc. If PSA is late, they say they will compensate you. End of story.
Monthly specials are usually a deal and everyone should expect their cards (etc) when they are done.

BUT, what I don't understand (under standard pricing) is "approximately 30 days". Sorry, that's BS. Pick a time and stick with it.
I recently (August) sent tix in to be graded. It's now day 42. Is that approximately 30? No on your life.

Step up to the plate PSA!

I wonder just what the turnover rate is for a grader, especially at a place like PSA with as many cards as they get. Sitting around a looking at cards all day might sound like a dream job for most of us but I think I'd get some serious cabin fever after a while: A sterile room, little interaction with other people, going nearly blind by looking so closely at cards all day. Plus, I imagine it's a very mentally exhausting job. Just as we make most of our mistakes when we're tired, I'm certain the same thing applies to grading mistakes.
  • The thing that drives me crazy is the way they log in the submissions. You would think that any submissions that came in after yours would be lined up behind yours, but it appears that this is not the case. Board members constantly report getting back later orders they submitted while earlier submissions languish at PSA for months. I think if they adhered to a first come first served policy most collectors would accept the delays due to manpower problems at PSA knowing that at least no one jumped ahead of them on the "line".
  • The key is HIRE more graders and TRAIN them

    Amen, brother.

While viewing my past submission results, I've wondered whether graders are truly trained or merely coached.

I've been wondering the same thing ever since the slow downs started. Anyone know if PSA has lost any graders during the last 6-12 months? I think the CU web-site only identifies the top graders.
  • Didn't they advertise on these boards looking for graders several months ago?
  • I am now on the 9th day of my initial 7 day submission. I just tried their 800 number but it doesn't work. I wonder if they were caught in the fires?
  • Start sending to SGC. PSA might start getting the picture sooner or later if people start choosing the other company much more often........
