Does Size Realy Matter ???

There is somethig different about these pictures, can you tell a difference?

#1 image

#2 image

#3 image

#4 image

#5 image

Are all 5 images the same size?

Yes and No,
while 1,2,3 &,4 are the same dimension 700 pixels x 350 pixels,
5's dimensions are 1000 pixels x 500 pixels,
they are not the same file size.

#1's file size is 126.57KB
#2's file size is 81.32KB
#3's file size is 45.86KB
#4's file size is 29.76KB
#5's file size is 54.21KB

Look how much larger the #5 image looks but it is smaller in size
than 1 & 2 and only slightly larger in file size than 3.

Your monitor can not show you the difference in quality,
its beyond the monitors capibility.
Even if your monitor could show you the difference
your eyes could not distinguish the difference in quality,
its beyond your eyes capibility.

Which one would you rather transport (ie.upload to photobucket)
if they all look & display the same,
then the smallest file size would be the quickest to upload.

If you want to print the image it's a different ball game, BIGGER is better.....
but for viewing on the web size realy doesn't matter that much.

I see no difference on #'s 1,2, or 3, but 4 is definitely a lower quality (it looks more pixelized on my screen)...

I can see a difference between #1 and #3. there is quite a bit of pixelation on #3 in the fields. To much compression on #3 (#5 also)

here are cropped images of #1 and #3 where I expanded the images 8x and then gave them a simimlar fairly harsh sharpening (same process for both). The blocks that show up on #3 are jpg compression artifact.

I'm looking at the small nick close to the tip of the beak on the reverse. On #1 and #5, it is pretty clear and noticeable. On 2-4, it's there but not as obvious. I don't follow fine size, but rather go with dpi and dimensions of the image. For my files, I keep 300dpi full size + images. For web use, I drop that significantly.

    An example...
For my Columbian Expo items, I keep images that are 300dpi and 3x3 inches. I can't imagine using a larger image for anything and have plenty of resolution to reduce the image and still have clarity. For my web-based images, I usually drop the dpi to 120 and either 2 or 2.5 inches. Then Save for Web in Photoshop drops the dpi to 72 keeping the size.

dpi only really matters when you are printing. An image that is 4 x 4 inches at 150 dpi will show the same on your screen as a 2 x 2 at 300 dpi. The computer only knows that they are both 600 x 600 pixels.

3, 4, and 5 show compression artifacts that are too strong for my taste when looking at web pictures.

  • If you use photoshop the degree of sharpness in the image is a main driver as to the size of the file. If you shrink a large photo down and save it, then save another copy that you've sharpened the sharp photo will have a much larger file size. The amount of jpg compression you use is the other thing that has a big impact on file size. 50% seems to be a good compromise.

To me the first one looks sharper then the rest and number 3 is starting to become blurry while number 4 is really blurry.

People should use image software that allows you to set the exact DPI and screen size of the final product. Most monitors can only display 72dpi, the newer ones can do 96dpi. So 96dpi is the max you should use for an image that will only be viewed on a computer.

I try to make my images 800x600 in screen size and use 72 dpi.

  • It's a little large for my screen newbie. I can view about an 8" coin pic and see the entire coin at one time. Great detail and pic though.

  • I apologise.
