Please explain how this got into a slab...

I guess coins naturally rainbow tone in minutes now.

I can't help but think the coin turned after being holdered (coated with something prior to submission?). If not, there is some idiocy going on at a certain TPG.

They must have toned it in the slab by putting the whole thing in some kind of gas.

I asked David Hall about this very coin. This was his reply:

    Date Posted: Oct/23/2007 1:47 PM

    Hi Wes,

Hard to say from the scan.

I would wonder how a coin so new could get toned so fast?

    Thanks,

    David

I have seen these for sale on eBay loose.

These haven't been processed or something.

    Cool color!

There's a discussion about this seller over on the eBay coin board. The speculation is that these coins have been gassed in the slab.

For coins/situations like this, PCGS should revoke any warranty if there is evidence or suspicion of tampering after the coin has been slabbed.

Junk... expensive junk. I wish PCGS would use a chemically sensitive paper for it's labels so it would change color along with the coin when it's gassed...

This is the same seller that's got the Blue Kennedy.

That blue kennedy is even more hideous. If I was pcgs, I would be a little concerned that gross looking AT coins are sitting in their plastic. Looks very bad.

I think it is envelope toning.
    Yep envelope toning.
Probably sat in an old time collection for couple weeks or so.
I too learned that right here on the CU boards.

I actually think that this could be a very good idea.

And now that it's in the public domain he can't cash in on it. On behalf of mankind, thank you Christian. These thanks + $10 = cup 'o joe at Starbucks. You never know, it may be possible, hydrogen sulfide sensitive paper? If that was the gas used. Are these coins silver? Of course, the coin's appearance is a pretty good clue, but maybe HRH, being interested in this thread, might start thinking about it.

<< <i>Recently I think Russ received a pcgs coin where the holder just came apart cleanly, what if the assumptions are wrong,t hat these coins are not gassed in the holder but somehow someone has figured a way of opening them and that is why we don't see too many because it is a tough chore to open them cleanly and the Doctor must go though many a holder to get a couple of clean breaks. Sealing them closed unfortunately shouldn't be that tough to do and difficult for the novice to detect although I have no idea how all this is accomplished. And if they are gassed through the plastic is the fact that the gas affects only metal and not plastic that makes it undectable to see damage to the plastic? You know I don't even think an expert should answer my questions so as not to foster these things but I just thought I should mention . >>

    It was Marty, not Russ.
I'd go with the gas story as well, from the looks of the coin.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • Coins can be gassed in the holders with just a little knowledge... a good read is "Coin Chemistry" by Weimar W. White. There is a chapter about this... exhibits several case studies... results... scary how possible and fairly easy it can be.

Not necessary since slabs are not air tight. Also, a drilled hole would be detectable.

Perhaps its ime for PCGS to look into a 100% sealed slab; if practical.

  • The sonic seal is rarely perfect on PCGS holders and no tampering is necessary in most cases. Just a practical application of physics and time. The best solution is a airtight holder.

Uh, PCGS put it in there!!image

Now, how did it get toned? Uh, smoe enterprising dude [taking advantage of the non-airtight property of the PCGS slab] prolly put a bunch o them into a vacuum chamber an sukked all the air out mit a vacuum pump. He then refilled the vacuum chamber mit his mixture of toning gases an let it set around fer a spell. He then hookt up his trusty ol vacum pump and sukked all the gases out o the chamber wunce again. He probly did that a couple times to make sure that all the toning gases were removed frum the slab.
