Yovani Gallardo...Good time to buy/sell????

I should know more about this guy, since he is in the Cardinals division, but just received an email off of another board to sell a card that I had pulled...2004 SP Prospects Draft Duos Dual Auto Yovani Gallardo and Joshua Wahpepah #'d 007/175. Not much on fleabay for this card, but his single signed card #323 SP Top Prospects (#d/400) has listings for between $179 and $400 for Buy-It-Nows...no current auctions, though.

Is now a good time to try and move this card? Any idea what I should ask for this one??

I don't usually look for "business advice" on here, but I figure somebody out there must have a better idea on this than me.

Thanks in advance.

  • not an expert on this, but in general the best time to "cash" in on a pitchers rookie card is when he gets initially hot. After that, no matter what he does (unless he becomes the most dominant pitcher in the game AND has high celebrity...only johan fits that mold these days) his value will go down. Peavy, brandon webb, beckett....their rookie cards dont go for much. Jon Papelbon, Liriano, Jed Weaver and Verlander are great examples. The rookie cards for all of those players, especially papelbon, went up dramatically after their hot starts last season. Check their prices now....no where near as bullish as last year. Zach Duke, Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Roy Halladay....I can keep going.

Gallardo came in with some fan fare this season. Not as much as the Giants' Lincecum. He was mildly successful. Probably the 3rd or 4th best rookie pitcher last season (behind Lincecum, Bannister, Dice-K and maybe Guthrie). I think he can be a solid pitcher. But, that means nothing in the collecting world. CC Sabathia is a solid pitcher and his rookie cards can be had on ebay quite easily.

I wish I can give you a price to sell the card, but im not a modern collector. The best thing to do is to try to see what his cards were going for when he first came up this season. How high did they increase? How much did they fall after the fan fare wore off? I would gauge his card prices to be somewhere in between. I think he does have enough upside such that his cards can increase. But, I think there may be too much risk (since he wasnt that great in his debut and he plays for a small market team) in keeping his cards for a long term "investment." In other words, sell now.

Local perspective here in Milwaukee is that we haven't even scratched the surface on this kid's talent. They didn't plan to bring him up until the September callup, but due to injuries, they had no choice but to pull the trigger a little early. Having seen him pitch a few times, I think he's a pretty special pitcher. Of course, I have had limited exposure, but he had more good outings than bad...but one of his bad outings was A W F U L. I think that worked out to be good experience for the kid. Expectations are that he will be in the starting rotation next year from what I have heard and read.

Ramble over. Take it for what it's worth.
  • He pitches for a small market team in Wisconsin... He will not be any better than Webb and how collectable is he? I would say to wait and sell next spring when people are thinking about baseball again.

Not sure I like his sig on the card it looks like his pen was running out of ink image

SELL. I think the best time to sell generally is when people are speculating about his future. The odds of any player being a SUPER STAR are very slim. I would sell, sell, sell.

Sell!! Take advice from a guy that still has a PSA 10 Zack Grienke UD Prospects signed rookie. At one point it was over $100 dollars on Ebay. Now I would be luky to get $20. I am still holding out hope for a come back image

  • Are you a gambler? Pitchers are high risk IMO not that I really prospect though. For that amount of $$ Id sell. Odds are you'll come ahead in the long run.

in cards you strike when the player is HOT, very very rarely do the cards hold their value or return to lofty heights.

Just sell everything on ebay except for those two Emmitts. Sell them to me image
  • There's virtually no pitchers in the game that are very collectible so you have to sell while it's high. I've seen him pitch several times and he's incredible, but so were Kerry Wood and Mark Prior at one time. Nobody cares about pitchers and they are just too risky to hold onto.

I have no idea who he is. His last name sounds like a bottle of wine.

    SELL SELL SELL

In reality, it would be a crap shoot on the long term career of this kid. Remember Ben McDonald? Todd Van Poppel? Ramon Martinez?

Just an example...lets say he has a decent career like Brandon Webb is having so far....Webb's RC have actually gone DOWN in the past few years and he has pitched like a STUD!!!!! Plus, Milwaukee is going to have a hard time filling holes without spending some $$$ on players...no national recognition and Webb had that this year.

Even if things go well, most pitchers cards never stay up in value for a long time.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
