Vam question -- reverse Clashed E on an 1883-cc

lavalava Posts: 3,286 ✭✭✭
Anyone ever see such a thing. I was looking at a 1883-cc I purchased and noticed the E, although I don't think this clashed variety is known in 1883-cc. It is subtle, just a partial E, but it is there. Sorry, I don't have pictures. Given the large population of 1883-cc Morgans, I'm sure others must exist too.

Is this old news or a potential new find?

This would be a HUGE new find! We need photos for a better look... and if it is an E-clash, Leroy Van Allen needs to see it!
    When in doubt, don't.

Dennis, pm me your email and I'll shoot a picture tomorrow and send it to you. I don't have the know-how to post here.

Oops - never mind -- I see it is already on your profile.

    I'll email you tomorrow.

I'd like to see this as well. If it is new, it's a biggie. I assume the coin is uncirculated? Which VAM is it, ignoring the clash?

The coin is uncirculated -- still in the GSA holder. Not sure what vam # it is, but it has a lot of vam stuff going on. I don't have it in front of me, but I recall the slanted date, and a dash under one of the numbers, and various polish lines. Maybe I can email pix to someone and they can post them here. I'm pretty sure I'll have to take the pix through a microscope.

On very very close inspection under the microscope tonight, I think what I am seeing is not a clashed E but a partially clashed TY, as pictured in Mark Kimpton's book of Elite Clashed Morgans, 1887-o vam 30A. It was impossible to photograph. The letters don't run from tailfeathers to bow, but are like well-placed die chips where the letters would be, in my opinion, but something a little more connected than just chips. I'll grant you it is subtle, but a lot of vam qualities I normally can't even find, like a clashed S or T by the hair.

    Other attributes:

    obverse
    slanted date
    doubled date
    dash under 2nd 8
    extra metal above 3
clash line through stars to the right of the date running up through UNUM
some clashing under nose and bottom lip
parallel lines in R of pluRibus

    reverse
1ct C of CC full of horizontal polish lines
2nd C of CC has a few short polish lines at inside top portion
M initial in bow has been struck about 4 times
long polish line through G in God
long polish line through We entending toward eagle's wing
denticles far apart and some deeply cut, and some filled with fragments of numbers of letters, most notably at tip of eagle's right wing
numerous polish lines extending from rims

I'll email some pix out tomorrow to the emails listed in the profiles of those of you expressing interest. I'm not that familiar with the `83-cc vams, so I'm not sure what the key diagnostics are to identify it.
