What is the Typical Premium for a PL Designation on a $20 Lib?

Thinking about picking up a common date 62PL $20 Liberty and would like opinions as to what premium I should expect to pay for a PL designation.

Thanks in advance!!

    I don't know but I saw where a 1896 MS-62 Liberty Double Eagle sold for $977.00 at Heritage and a 1896 MS-62 PL sold for $1725.00.

I dont know either but I would want to see that puupy in hand. A couple I have seen in the past were not that imppessive as far as the PL look.

Personally I don't think they are worth any premium unless the coin itself offers a striking appearance. The PL or * labels by themselves add nothing to a gold coin. The coin still has to speak for itself.
Most $20 PL coins look like they were run over by a train. No premium should be charged for that...unless they start to offer a ROBAT designation.

Don't be sucked into the low pops of these newly designated $20 PL coins. They will stay low pop for a long time considering there was
almost 20 yrs of coins that got graded before them where no designation was available. After grading for a year, multiply those numbers by 10-20X to get an idea of rarity.

Unless the coin is a phenominal knockout stick to paying no more than a $50-$100 premium imo. I'd rather have a regular MS63 $20 Lib than a PL MS62 for the same money. Most 62's and 63's do look like they deserve the ROBAT designation.

Who gives the PL designation? That last one I looked at was an NGC one a couple years back, does PCGS give the PL designation as well?

  • If you go through past auctions they tend to get about 35%-50% bump more so for key dates. the problem is that the PL surfaces show bag marks very vividly and tend to get softer grades then the milky texture ones and tend to be a harder sale. If you find one that has set up camp at a dealers table you can get it for around retail but not sheet. I paid pcgs list at ms60 as it was a NGC ms60 PL for this one but it has gone at heritage for 1300-1600 before.

some years, being proof like was the norm. sure pay a few bucks
extra, but do not go crazy. if there is one PL of that date you can bet
    there is probably more.
