1979 Griffon; a new (for me) Canadian toner.

First shots. It is unusual to find a '79 with toning. Entombed in NGC plastic, SP67. Not as vibrant as some of the Canada commems., but not bad - not bad at all.

A favorite ship coin of collectors- you're right, you don't see many of these toned like other silver coins.

    What's the purity?

By the way, last image is best!

    Nice pick-up image

Are these not usually found toned because this is after RCM started encapsulating their Speciment Dollars?

Yes, the RCM started encapsulating their commem $s after 1973. This coin, I suspect, was not an individually encapsulated coin, but rather came out of a 7-coin 1979 SMS set which was packaged pretty much the way the USM packaged their Prestige sets in the late 80s and early 90's. Why it toned this way I do not know. I will say that I also own a 1979 7-coin set. The Griffon $ in that set shows a hint of a beginning of tone on the hinge-directed side of the coin, which is exactly where this coin toned, on the hinge-side of the packaging.

I'm not certain of the purity of the silver used for the Griffon $. My guess is that it is 90% silver - I'll have to look that up when I get home tonight.

Here is a picture of one of those sets.

The composition is 50% silver and 50% copper.
