The reverse looks suspect to me. I don't know anything about V-Nickels but that is what jumps out at me when looking at the reverse. Maybe that is how it is supposed to look.
I'd go with a pf-65 if it slabs. I have seen many liberty nickels with the same look as the reverse that your coin has that have not been able to slab.
I know it's a proof and it should be expected, but that is still a fantastic strike and that is not often seen on V-nickels, proofs or not.
Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!
I don't know why the reverse shows up like that in the photo. In hand it looks like the planchet, almost woodgrained, but I don't really collect this series.
There are no hairlines at all that I can see.
I do know that this guy had it in his collection for quite some time.
Thanks for the input..I will be submitting it soon.
I'd say the entire reverse center area is wiped (2 tone coloration). And it does not carry on into the more protected areas. Light lines running from 2:00 to 8:00 which don't appear to be polishing lines. Just a gut feel that it's only PF63 or so. Initial look is gem though.

<< <i>Could be anything from 63 to 66. It's impossible to make an intelligent guess based on that picture. >>
made the pic a little bigger if it helps at all....
