Ebay is soooooo fun....check this out:

linky

I reported this item to ebay 3 days ago as a counterfeit. For those with the capability, just blow up the reverse
big enough and you will see COPY on the shield. Now it's over $800 and it's an obvious fake.
So, I email the seller an hour ago and advised that they may be in over their heads with a possible negative
and a definite return in their future. I said they need to disclose that it's a counterfeit.

So, five minutes ago I get a respose from the seller that says "I have disclosed. Don't you know what CC means?
It means carbon copy. Don't email me again until you learn what you are talking about"

Oh my,

Many Quality coins for sale at http://www.CommonCentsRareCoins.com
  • I just sent him a note through the ask the seller a question feature....

"Why are you not disclosing that this coin says copy on the tail feathers........fraud is a very serious thing in this Country and lawsuits can be filed so you might want to make note in your description that this isn't an authentic coin from 1870.....just food for thought....."

Obvious counterfeit, date style doesn't match known genuine 1870-CC twenties.

And, seller's response indicates low numismatic IQ.

  • Maybe instead of always contacting eBay or the seller we should start
forwarding fraudulent listings to the D.A. of the city where the item is
located. Not sure if this item is meant as fraud, but it sure is hard to
see copy in the tail feathers.

Especially since COPY isn't in the tail feathers. It's at the top of the Federal shield, just below the eagle's neck.image

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Lee, just copy the listing number. Go to help and type in counterfeit. Click on top one listed.
Enter the pasted number and send it!

Ok, it ended at $7,100. Not to bad a scam. Poor buyer thinks he's getting a super rare
coin. That COPY will make him puke when he sees it on the reverse! There will be fire in
his eyes and ire in his heart!

I emailed the buyer askiong him/her to enlarge the reverse picture. Also sent a link to the National Collectors Mint since they are the folkks that made this ....thing!

    National Collectors Mint

I only hope the buyer doesn't complete the transaction since the seller will simply state that the coin she sent didn't have the word COPY stamped into it!

I'm just shocked that EBay chose to ignore this.......................

I sent the seller an email too and mentioned CC was a mint mark for Carson City.

I know I made a mistake and I told the winner about it, I tried to cancel the auction but it would not let me. I thought cc meant carbon copy, it was all my fault and Iam turely sorry for any misunderstandings. Thank You for your time. JoAnn

I am confused are you saying that you are the seller of the coin?
I'll see your bunny with a pancake on his head and raise you a Siamese cat with a miniature pumpkin on his head.

You wouldn't believe how long it took to get him to sit still for this.

I should have been more clear. I sent the seller an email telling her CC was the mint mark for Carson City and she was selling a Copy but representing it as an authentic Coin which would cause her Big Problemsand it would be prudent to cancel the auction. She replied to my email 10 minutes after the auction ended.

Her reply was; "I know I made a mistake and I told the winner about it, I tried to cancel the auction but it would not let me. I thought cc meant carbon copy, it was all my fault and Iam turely sorry for any misunderstandings. Thank You for your time. JoAnn "

I always try to look at every angle. Rereading her auction after reading this post, she said "cc" several times including the title. If she was a secretary in the 70s or 80s when memos were actually typed she deeply seated "cc" into her vocabulary as "carbon copy". She started it at $1 and may have been hoping for $30 or $40 for the copy. Remember that she couldn't change the auction in the last 12 hours when she started getting PMs. OTOH, she may have been hoping for a minor scam and it got out of contol on her. On the 3rd hand, she might have tried to collect the big money w/o the members here contacting her.

A "couterfeit" would try to look like a real coin. This piece of doodoo is just a replica. Not even close to real at a glance. I agree that the auction is misleading almost to the point of criminality, but I still don't consider the coiny-looking-thing to be a counterfeit.

So much for all the gloom and doomers who had already concluded the $7k was gone. But this story will be told for some time, "I saw a copy sell on ebay for $7k back in 07...."
