1877 Indian Cent - Grade Revealed AG-3 Details

I just inherited this coin. It was in a roll of pennies from 50 years ago. Very worn condition. Any guesses as to the grade? I'm an old newbie. Does is rate a G?

AG, and more importantly for this date, looks authentic.

It's only worth slabbing if you don't trust how you are storing it, or else you want to sell it and make sure its authentic.

Only if you want to sell it. I wouldn't call myself an expert, but I've been collecting IHCs for 30 years and I've studied up on the diagnostics of a real 1877 IHC, and I'm quite sure this one is authentic. It has all the diagnostics of an authentic 1877 -- the date looks right, the strike on the obverse rim is weak from 11:00 to 2:00 as is typical for 1877 cents, the shallow N reverse looks right.

But it's still worth slabbing if you want to sell it. If you don't have any plans to sell it, I'd leave it and enjoy it as is.

I would slab it so when the time come to sell it, the future buyer will know it's real and you will get top dollar.

AG-3. I would slab it at some point, especially if planning on selling it later.

    No.
  • How do I remove the goo? Or should it stay forever?

I think it could go either AG3 or G4. I would slab it, ANACS is only like $12. The value of the coin, assuming it is slabbable (i.e.- genuine) would increase more than the cost of certification.

The reverse would probably go G4, but the obverse has no rims and would be AG3. Hopefully the corrosion around the feather won't keep it from slabbing.

The first photo look like it would slab all day long AG-3. Second photo shows some possible corrosion that might get it BB'd at pcgs or ngc. I'd send it to anacs. Nobody will argue a low circulated grade from them

I agree, I was thinking corrosion, but the first photos didn't show it. Can't hurt though to try a submission. ANACS should do it.

I doubt if it will grade, too porous. I'd just leave it alone. These always get good bids on ebay.

I went to an auction the other day that had three AG 1877 IHCs similar to this coin, and every single one sold for Good money.

    Obv: AG 03...
    Rev: G 04...
    Corroded / G 4 details...
ANACS is the way to go for this.

Yup I agree. I don't think it would make it into a PCGS holder.
  • Is the corrosion that bad? Or do you think the flash on the camera amplified the image?

    Daylight photos.

I think it will get an AG-03 from ANACs. (probably no problem noted but it's possible)

It's worth sending it if you plan to sell it, there's so many fakes and altered dates so buyers will pay more in the slab.

  • The coin is off to ANACS for grading. I'll post the results when they arrive.

What's the value of a AG3 coin? Graded versus ungraded?

I've been looking at alot of these lately, both slabbed and raw. I think everyone nailed the technical grade at AG3 and I agree that this might not slab at PCGS or NGC...but... I've seen '77s recently in both of those holders at G4 that look similar in condition to the one you depict here. The scratches give me pause and for that reason I'd send it to ANACS... these have a notoriously weak obverse strike and I think the old maxim of "full rims" for G4 gets a pass with this date. From your second pics, I see a full legend which might [and I say MIGHT] bump it up to G4. This plus it's a truly key date for the series, so I tend to think it gets a pass to a higher grade in alot of instances. This is great if you have one...but it sort of sucks in todays market if you're trying to buy one. Anyway...congrats on a truley wonderful find!!

...slabbed... I've seen them as low as $500-ish... I wouldn't touch one raw!

    Give or take, maybe $400.
  • Is the "details" rating a sort of 1/2 of a grade?

I purchased it in '84 (I think) for $650 (and i'm sure about the price!)

    Is it worth slabbing?

Not much point to it, in my opinion. You know its authentic. You know its grade. Why bother with slabbing it?

My opinion: authentic, about good. No damage, just wear. This scarce coin would fit nicely into a circ set just the way it is. Slab it and its out of place with the other coins.
