All that for a freakin WRAPPER?

Okay, so as many of you already know, I'm a newb to collecting. My 1949 Bowman Baseball set is the very first set I'm working on.

That being said... I saw this auction for a 1949 Bowman wax pack wrapper and thought it would be kinda cool to have it with my set...

It ends in 5 hours and it's already at $164.07... are YOU JOKING?!?!?!?!?!

Is this was vintage pack wrappers go for? How high will this go?!?!?!?!?!

Or does he only like '75 minis?
  • vintage wrappers are highly collectible.
  • I know they're highly collectible, but this much money? Is that normal?

I dont konw what wrappers usually sell for....

um - just check out the sellers other items for sale. Should give you an idea (actually 20 of them) on what wrappers sell for.

    Alan

The only source I have for wrappers is the BBC Kid guide that he sold for like 5 bucks years ago.

So the prices in it are not accurate - ebay prices for this kind of stuff can vary quite a bit.

    image

The wrapper looks in pretty good shape - this variation lists in his book at 200$

There's also a scarcer Green/orange variation that lists for $250.

Of interest, this is the only year that there's no penny (1cent) wrapper listed.

So, based on the current price, there's demand and perhaps these don't come up that often?

    Good luck
    mike

edit: an empty wax pack box lists at a whopping 1500$!!!

No it's not normal, and there will be a do over at the end of the auction. image
  • UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!

He sold a 1953 TOPPS BASEBALL 5 CENT WAX PACK WRAPPER for over $600.00!!!!

    Wow...

Pardon my ignorance on this one guys (as stated before, I'm a newb)..... but that seems ridicuous to me...

$600.00... I'll take a Jackie Robinson RC.... thanks!

    Allllaaaan

There are also guys in this world saying "WOW $600 for a Jackie Robinson rookie? I'll take a 1953 wrapper instead." You can't just look at everything from your own collecting perspective.

nam812, thanks for pointing that out. I guess I never put that into perspective. I'm a card collector, someone else is a wrapper collector. I do need to be mindful of other collections.

    Good call man!

    You're welcome Alan.

Tho, I agree that's a lot to spend, I still think it's a cool item to have with your set.

A lot of collectors pick up items "connected" with what they're collecting to add interest to their search.

For example, let's say I'm doing the 69T set.

Well, besides a pack, box and wrapper, one could also - perhaps - pick up the wrapper "proof":

    image

Also, another set I like is the 73T candy lids - but I also collect the Lid proofs:

    image

And ya can find unopened candy lid boxes of the stuff.

Just some ideas - the box for your set would be really cool!

Seems pretty reasonable compared to what they go for in catalog auctions. There are some pretty scarce ones, and once you get into the '30's and '40's many get very expensive. I can't imagine what a Delong or George C Miller wrapper would go for, if it was properly listed.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • Thanks Stone.

Yeah, I agree that the "connection" is cool. I built the entire 2006 Bowman Heritage mini set (and later sold it) because it was the first complete set like the 49 BB set. I think in 89 they had some Bowman Tiffany inserts of the 49 BB cards for Snider Paide and Ashburn, but that's not a whole set.

I agree the pack would be cool, but I currently have a couple other pending deals for more 49 Bowmans and will not be able to buy this right now. Man... lotta loot for a wrapper!

It is what it is - certain wrappers are tough and the price fetched reflects that. 1953 Topps' are tough - but '55s, for example, are easier and seem to go for less.

    Agree Anthony.

And as I said - 'companion' pieces are just too cool to round out one's collection.

How you been? I'm doin OK - got off early today and am doing some reading.

Did you see the Boston game last night?

Either it was the greatest 'comeback' since the down 3 or the biggest choke by Cleveland!

Unbelievable what people pay for things they want. I put in a snipe awhile back for a lousy 1962 Topps stamp PSA 9 for $235 and didn't even win it. These stamps were worthless little throw ins in the packs back then...well they ain't worthless now. LOL

What's a Topps Stamp? (again, pardon my ignorance, I'm a newb)

    Thanks!

But yeah, I've paid over SMR for some of my cards, just because of rarity, or population, etc. I'd pay a heck of a lot more for most of my Red Sox cards!

I have a complete raw 66 topps football set and it wouldn't be complete without at least one wrapper.
Gary musta missed this one. Now next is those darn funny ring inserts.

Rube has got it exactly right. I mean "nobody" used to keep the wrappers.

Ya know the interesting thing collecting as a kid, I always intended to keep my cards forever, and although there's no way I could have possibly foreseen in the 1960's the high future value of cards, I did look at the cards as some sort of future value so my premise as a kid was also collecting a lot of unmarked checklists, figuring "everyone" was writing on them so they would basically be scarce if keeping them unmarked. Well it turns out I was wrong in that assessment and most 1960's checklists aren't really worth that much, even unmarked, unless they are very high grade which none of the cards I kept are. Wish I would have kept the wrappers instead of the checklists - LOL
