Need some expert opinion

This is my first post here, I collect US coins but I really like some of the world coins. I was looking at teletrade last night and I really like this coin

It is really that rare? Looks like a cheap price for one of a kind coin

It's a gorgeous Thaler. Not sure about the rarity factor, but PCGS population reports are not really an accurate measure of scarcity of World coins. Perhaps someone with a Davenport can tell you more about this issue.

No, it doesn't seem so, although I'm not sure what the difference is between Dav-6099 and Dav-6099A.

Not rare by any means. Pretty decent strike. The pics make it look kind of ghastly, but I'm sure it's better in person.

Hammered at $690 with 15% juice included. I dont have much to compare against, but this seems to be about right.

That is quite an interesting coin. How much does a coin like that go for in VG-F?
  • worldcoinguyworldcoinguy Posts: 3,019 ✭✭✭✭
Krause has it at $75 in VG and $150 in F if you could fine one.

That's a big misconception many Lightsiders seem to have about slabbed world coins... whereas tons of US coins have been slabbed to the point where pop reports somewhat accurately reflect actual scarcity, with even the most popular world coins there is still such a huge amount out there that has not been slabbed that pop reports in no way at all reflect actual scarcity. Sometimes it cracks me up to see ebayers hype a coin as "MS64 -- top pop -- the only one of the type graded at either tpg, etc". I'm sure it is the only one graded, so far...

I think you are 100% correct. The TPG idea is laughable to many European collectors. Can you imagine the quality of some of the old collections sitting in vaults, banks, safes, and coin cabinets in Europe?

Yep. I know a bunch of folks this side of the pond have become disillusioned by poor quality on ebay and turned to slabs as a result. I just can't bring myself to do it. For one thing, I can't afford the markup plastic brings. My solution: find trustworthy dealers and a good bit of patience. I think in some ways the rise in many world coin prices is due not only to the rise of native economies (ie, Portugal, Russia, etc), but also a touch due to the lack of confidence in online transactions and the resultant rise in slabs.
