Need grade opinion on this Canadian 1914 50c

There is quite a big gap in value between grades on the 1914 50c. What you you grade this one ignoring the scratches.

Judging by just the wear pattern, I would estimate a strong G/VG

Edited: after seeing the grading book below, I think it's a nice VG.

Here are images from Charlton's Grading Book. Dang, kinda small.

    I would say F-12.

Looking at the guide - appears VG. Is there something going-on with the second "1" in the date?

That's more the image than the coin.

While this is definitely not in my area of experience but my first thought was Fine. If I were buying I wouldn't want to pay more than VG price due to the mentioned scratches, if I were selling I would list it as Fine and note the scratches so the buyer isn't surprized when it arrives in his or her mailbox. I know a few people who would probably say it was VF (these are the ones I don't deal with much anymore BTW).

I would say VG10... but at VG10 that is about as good as they come for this grade

I sent this coin and some other Canadian coins to CCCS, a Canadian TPG. It came back as VG10. I was hoping for F-12 because the Trends value is $30 in VG and $100 in F-12.

I don't think F12 is unreasonable considering the overall appearance of the coin... this one is a very tough call... seriously

My first guess was VG (I always thought the band had to be 90% complete to make F).

At first glance I thought F.

I agree with VG10. But I'm sure many collectors could agree on F12. There are some more details in the middle of the crown than a VG, as well as on his clothing.

CCCS probably went by the overall grade based on the wear on the band of the crown, then upped the 8 to 10 because of the additional details.

I think the obverse is F.

I think this coin is an F with a little more wear, maybe F10, if that can exist.

If anyone is interested, here are the other coins I got back from CCCS:

    1858 1c F12 'Porous Surface'
    1859 1c Wide 9 Over 8 VF-20
    1859 1c N9 D-P #1 F-15
    1891 1c SDLL Obv #3 F-12
    1891 1c SDSL Obv #3 VF-20
    1902H 5c Small H VF-20
    1902H 5c Small H VF-30
    1900 5c Oval O VF-20

I thought the 5c coins were AT LEAST EF-40. I guess it's time for me to learn how to grade Canadian 5c fishscales.
