A veiw of the Yankees from a Giants, Niners fan.

I have seen ton of posts about the Yankees situation in the last week. I understand what the fans are going through. As a loyal Giants, Niners fan. Namely the Niners, You come to expect perfection if you were alive in the 80's. That decade had an expectation of perfection. Thanks to Montana, Rice, Craig, Clark, Lott, just to name a few.
But things do change. Players come and go, as do coaches.
Yankee fans really do have it made. Unlimited funds from the Boss. He's dedicated to winning it all every year. My team has Bonds. And Bonds only. Paid him 18 million I think. Not for his production the last few years, but for the all time record. Not for the hope of playoffs, or World Series. Dreams maybe.
Just publicity, not much more than that. A few streaks here and there, but not much more.
Point is that at the end of the day it's all business. Montana left. He had tenure didnt he? Great resume I think. Rice had a few catches too. Lott was a God in S.F. The "Catch" made Clark a hero. All left eventually.
Are the Yankees stacked with All-Stars, Yes. So much so that Bonds wouldnt even be starting on that team.
Torre is a classy guy, no doubt. His most impressive atribute to me was his ability to handle the N.Y. market, and all the egos. Thats tough. He was great in that situation. 4 rings! Awesome, 12 straight playoffs! Awesome. Always a threat to go all the way.
But 5 million dollars wasnt what he was looking for? Whats wrong with one year? If you are a great coach, and in that position, why not take it. Win the World Series and get another 3 million or so. Highest dollars EVER paid to a manager. I just dont see any insult in that at all.
Tenure is for teachers. Athletes live and die financially by performance. Why would he be above that? I understand some athletes wanting 3-5 years, but thats when they know they are at the end of a career. It's just security for the last few years when the are all used up. Managers now?
In all Honesty, take the offer just to show the Boss up. Say " I will take the 5 now, and the 3 after I win the World Series!
This isnt a slam on the Yanks at all. Everybody wants to be a Yankee. Even Me.

You don't see the insult in having a 33% pay cut after 4 world series wins and 12 straight playoff appearances? You don't see the insult in being waved a one year contract like you're a rookie ballplayer with no resume whatsoever? Do you honestly think the next manager will be given a one year contract and a pay structure that includes nearly 50% of pay in bonuses? Neither did I.

Can you name any manager in, say, the last 20 years to be given a ONE year contract, or contract extension? Please get back to me if you do.
<< <i>In all Honesty, take the offer just to show the Boss up. Say " I will take the 5 now, and the 3 after I win the World Series! >>
He doesn't get to choose his players, he is forced to go out with crappy rotation after crappy rotation...and yet somehow he is the fall guy for the team absolutely falling apart in the playoffs, again? Why isn't Jeter forfeiting some of his $20 million salary for batting .176 with 3 hits in 4 games? Why isn't Clemens returning some of the $28 million he earned this year for sucking? Why isn't Cashman getting fired too?
<< <i>This isnt a slam on the Yanks at all. Everybody wants to be a Yankee. Even Me. >>
No, not everybody wants to sell their soul and be a yankee, or a yankee 'fan'.
You have reponded to a couple of topics I put up now. They were not invitations to unload.
Im a big beleiver in only talking the talk if you can walk the walk.
Are you an ex-pro athlete? If so, knock yourself out. You have earned it I guess.
If not, try watching and enjoying. It's really fun to be a fan. Not a critic of every sentence written.
<< <i>Wow! Thats a reply. Dont take this personal, but you need a vacation. No Tv, No Computer, No Sports page. >>
Why do you say that? because I took the time to reply to your posts point by point? And what's wrong with having an opinion? Are you saying it's ok for you to have one, to post these things but people can't post replies that are in opposition?
<< <i>You have reponded to a couple of topics I put up now. They were not invitations to unload. >>
Nobody is unloading, simply trying to find out why you feel the way you do, trying to give you some insight you may not have. I'm sorry if you feel a differing opinion is 'unloading', but that's all it is - is a differing opinion.
<< <i>Im a big beleiver in only talking the talk if you can walk the walk.
Are you an ex-pro athlete? If so, knock yourself out. You have earned it I guess.

What exactly does this mean? Are you saying that only ex pro athletes can be critical of the game? Are you saying then, that Peter Gammons isn't qualified to write about the game because he's not an ex pro? What about people like John Clayton, who follows the NFL for ESPN? Are only ex pro athletes qualified to be critical of the game?
No by no means am I comparing myself to them, but it seems a bit self serving to say that only ex pro athletes can be critical.
And it's a lot of fun being a fan...but being a fan means (to me at least) debunking a lot of myths that surround sports.
No, you do not have to be a pro athlete to have an opinion . But when your opinions are given as the "Word Of God" and presented as " What kind of dumba** are you for thinking that" seems like Bobby Knight is responding.
And as far as being critical of the game. That's O.K. too. But angry critical? Or maybe excessive critical. Thats not to good. Very un-healthy.
In case you were wondering, yes I do have a degree, and yes its a minor in psych.
As for debunking myths in sports, Why? Those are what legends are made of.
Anyway's nothing personal. Only trying to say take it easy. They are making the Big Bucks. Not us. They must be doing something right.
<< <i>Fair enough, but whether you know this or not. You responses are are not responses, they are degrading and returned as an insult. >>
And one could take your posts in the same light...calling out pro athletes as 'cheaters' (like Brady Anderson and others) because you 'know' they couldn't possibly achieve what they did on their own is insulting to me.
<< <i>No, you do not have to be a pro athlete to have an opinion . But when your opinions are given as the "Word Of God" and presented as " What kind of dumba** are you for thinking that" seems like Bobby Knight is responding. >>
Word of god? Hardly seems to be what I post...but have your opinion...can't change that.
<< <i>And as far as being critical of the game. That's O.K. too. But angry critical? Or maybe excessive critical. Thats not to good. Very un-healthy. >>
This coming from a guy who has condemned an entire generation of players? An entire generation of players in the 90s who you essentially called cheaters? Yet I am 'excessive critical'?
<< <i>In case you were wondering, yes I do have a degree, and yes its a minor in psych. >>
No, I wasn't wondering.
<< <i>As for debunking myths in sports, Why? Those are what legends are made of. >>
Why? Why not? Never been one to sit back and accept myth as fact - why I never bought into religion or the bible.
NEVER condemned a generation. Only wanted opinions. You invented that.
NEVER insulted you. Is Brady Anderson your Father?
YES, you are excessively critical. You take it to heart. The only info you have is what you read. Or what is passed on to you, Second hand at best.
NEVER said believe myth as fact. I said myth is enjoyable. Sometimes it's all that left.
Lastly, every thread you feel a duty to respond to every sentence with quotes. This is not a test.
Your not defending your honor, or your family.
I just cant help but wonder. Have you EVER considered using all this energy in a positive way? Cure for AIDS maybe? World Hunger? Maybe if you were as dedicated to curing Cancer as you are this forum. You might become a "Myth" that changed the world as we know it. Sorry, that would be a fact.
You want to call out Brady Anderson, Luis Gonzalez for hitting one year highs in home runs.
You want to call out Sosa, McGwire, Bonds for hitting 60+ home runs.
But then play innocent when someone calls you on it.
No, I don't take it to heart, but I find it disheartening when someone claims to love the game, call out others for being overly critical, yet all I see are vague accusations being made against a whole generation of players.
That is all.
Goodnight.
You are a joker.
Dont even waste your time saying you " were calling me out " That really wastes my time.
"Playing innocent", this isnt Federal court.
You need help. Dont EVER live under the impression that you somehow intimidated me with your nonsense.
So your lame scam that I buckled under your " calling me out " made me play innocent. Good Luck.
Dont add to your ego. Its already at a clinical stage.
You are a shame of a human.
Once again, you turned a topic of interest into another " give me a life for one more day" waste of time.
I dont give 2 Shi** what the difference is in the decade of the 90's. Suppliments, training, Steriods, HGH, or evolution. I have my opinions, Others have theirs. I wanted to know what everyone thought.
And yes, they are vague accusations. Im not an investigator. Are you?
So..... Good night
That is all.
Funniest thing I have ever heard.
I now feel better knowing that it is nothing more than a typical " Whack Job "
Cant help but feel bad though, my god. Guess Im glad I didnt use my psych credentials for employment. I would have lost it if someone like this ever came into my office. Would it have been wrong to tell a person, do the world a favor and drive real, real, fast at night with you eyes closed?
It is funny though! Isn't it?
<< <i>You don't see the insult in having a 33% pay cut after 4 world series wins and 12 straight playoff appearances? You don't see the insult in being waved a one year contract like you're a rookie ballplayer with no resume whatsoever? >>
Ax, in earlier threads you were ripping Torre for being a sub par manager prior to the Yankees, and you strongly suggested that the only reason he was successful in NY was because of the great players he was given. It was a fair argument. But now you're ragging on the Yankee Organization for "insulting" this great man with what could have been $ 8 million dollars for ALL THAT HE HAS DONE for New York???
You just want to attack the Yankees, whether it's a player, manager, or the entire organization. That's ALL you're about. Find some angle and attack. Torre can't get it done anymore? Let's bring out the rag and remind everyone that he really always sucked. The Yanks offer him a deal when none was expected? The Yankees are a disgrace for dishonoring this genius manager who helped win 4 World Series and 12 straight playoff wins.
I see right through you. You are pathetic
One thing though. You said,
<< <i>Win the World Series and get another 3 million or so. Highest dollars EVER paid to a manager. I just dont see any insult in that at all. >>
Actually, he only needed his team to reach the World Series, not win it all, and he earns 3 million extra. And if he got knocked out in the first round he still gets an extra million. Keep failing the way we have for three year straight, and we still bump up your deal!
What the hell is wrong with that?
Now I really think he should have done it.
I get having pride in your job. But sometimes it gets in the way. Business is business.
I would have gone the opposite way just to show the Boss how wrong he was.
Show him up, then retire. Rarley does anyone get a chance like this one. Nothing to loose, everything to gain.
And as a bonus, if he did get to, or win the world series. He would have a position of power with the "Boss"
Can you imagine Torre saying, no problem. I will take that offer. Go to or even better, win the World series. Then say " I think I will retire now" . Take your multi year contract and stick it U-no where!
Ouch!!! Torre 1, The Boss 0!!! Game over. Although that is a bit childish.
I hope the yankees live up to their new vision of a manager and tie whoever they hire to a one year deal, and base nearly half of their pay into getting to the world series...hell I hope this is how they base all of their player contracts too.
They have to be consistent with the deal they offered Torre, if indeed pay for performance is their new motto.
<< <i>They have to be consistent with the deal they offered Torre >>
No they don't, not by a long shot.
<< <i>

I notice that KING TROLL didn't deny what I wrote.
Look, it's apparent you are so blinded by the premise of the yankees being owed world series championships that you think a manager who delivered 4 but had dared to go 7 years without wasn't needed. It's apparent you believe the BS spewing out of yankee HQ and not being able to read between the lines to see what was really happening.
Have fun with that ignorance, clown.
<< <i>Look, it's apparent you are so blinded >>
From Mr. Blind Hatred himself
<< <i>Hilarious that people still think that a one year contract is acceptable, and still no one can point out any manager who has been humiliated with a ONE year extension.
>>
from the ny times
"the reappointment of huggins to lead the yankees was made late yesterday afternoon by colonel jacob ruppert, president of the club. the announcement brings to an end the many rumors which have been flying about since mid season that huggins would not be pilot of the team in 1921. even before the pennant race was settled reports were in circulation that wilbert robinson was to become leader of the yankees and after the yankees had lost out in the pennant fight there was rumor after rumor connecting some prominent baseball man with the position which huggins has held since the start of the 1918 campaign. Huggins will arrive in new york today and sign the papers which will bind him to the new york club for another year. the contract like the one which expired with the 1920 season will be for one year, colonel ruppert declared yesterday. when huggins became manager of the yankees in 1918 he signed a 2 year contract and when the expired a year ago he signed for a single season."
ok, next?
had to go back to 1920?!?
Thanks for proving my point!

i thought that was fitting considering how easy it was to kill your idiotic statement

I will leave my comments on Joe's firing at this:
If the next yankee manager isn't brought in on a one year contract; if they don't have nearly 50% of their pay tied into making the world series; then Torre was fired, plain and simple.
If it is, as team president Levine says it is, a 'pay for performance' type atmosphere he is trying to foster with the contract he offered Torre, then the next manager should be expected to have the same one-year, perform to get paid type contract.
I'm out.
<< <i>I'm out. >>
Well out of your head anyway.
<< <i>It's pretty damning that you had to go back to 1920 to find an example of a one year contract extension.

no, its pretty damning, that you typed "Hilarious that people still think that a one year contract is acceptable, and still no one can point out any manager who has been humiliated with a ONE year extension"
and it took me 5 secs to give you an example from the yankees and with 2 back to back 1 year extensions, then you spin and won't admit that you were wrong (again).
eject!!!
