Pocket Piece Wear Progression Tracking Thread ~ Update November 2007

I was somewhat dissapointed at losing the 1982 Silver Washington Half Dollar that I had been using as my daily pocket piece for the past couple of years. It had gone from gem mint state to a solid XF and I was looking forward to seeing it get even slicker. Since I lost that coin recently in Bermuda I did some thinking about what to use as my new pocket piece.

Today I decided to use the Thomas Jefferson First Spouse Bronze Medal. I received the medal late last week direct from the Mint for a whopping $4 or something like that. It's quite attractive and surprisingly hefty (very thick). This medal will make an excellent pocket piece I think.

I'll do the same thing with this medal as I did with the last pocket piece. Here is the first photograph of the medal taken just tonight, moments after I cut it out of it's cellophane packet. I'll try to update this about every month or so.

Brand new, not carried as of yet. 10/19/2007

    Bummer about your lost piece.

That Jeff FS bronze is a good looking medal! Keep us posted.

Clad, my friend, you seem to have a real problem losing things lately. May I suggest that you also drill a hole in that medal, tie a string in it, and tie the other end around your wrist. image

I share your disappointment in losing your pocket piece. I too, had and lost a pocket piece, which might be of interest to Cladiator and MrHalfDime, because it was a Gallery Mint copy of the 1792 half disme. Would have made a great display coin in my case if circulated down to a Fine grade!

Rich, how long did it take you to lose that one? I'd thought of using a half dime as a pocket piece but was sure I'd lose it very quickly because of the size.

    Rich (Uhrich):

I wouldn't worry about a Gallery Mint replica 1792 half dime used as a pocket piece when it is in your hands, but what might happen if, say for instance, you should lose it? Once it becomes worn it almost invites someone to attempt to pass it as real. We identified just such an example on eBay on this very forum a couple of years ago, and were successful in having it removed from auction, but what becomes of such pieces later on? Hopefully your long lost pocket piece still retains the requisite word COPY, and will never show up in the numismatic marketplace as a genuine item.

At first glance I thought you were going to "pocket" the J-Lib $10 gold. Now that would be interesting...in a few years having the only G-4 J-lib!

Bit of a quick update. The medal is already turning pretty cool shades of BN. image

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Ok it's been nearly a month and I'm really surprised at the drastic changes already. I have submitted the medal to nothing to speed up tone or the look of the coin. It's been in my pocket every day when I'm out and on my nightstand when I'm home. The obverse is getting an interesting orange mottled tone while the reverse is getting fiery red with purples and oranges all over.

  • Denim? Khakis? Cottom twill? Just what sort of pocket is this medal doing its travelling ?
  • I'm a bit confused...the first piece does not look bronze at all. Just the photo?

It is bronze so I guess it's the picture.

Discoloring like that, and I'm scared to ask "What's in YOUR pocket?"

Nope, not yet but I'm sure it will sooner or later. My last pocket piece saw a few trips through both the washer and dryer on accident.

I am almost done stitching my new pair of pants made out of classic Taco Bell napkins, perfect for simultaneous pocket piece wear and artificial toning. The job is done in half the time. And I look pretty good wearing brown.
