Need everyone's help with a list....

Okay, here pretty soon I'll be back on track with the monthly budget. My wife and I had a pretty good idea. Okay, it was her idea. We want to make a list of names and put each name on a separate piece of paper. All the names will go in a box. Each month we will draw a name and that will be the player we focus the budget on. So, here's where you come in to the picture. We want names. Only a couple of rules, nothing past 1969. And we mainly want stars prior to 1950. All-stars and other well known players only. And baseball only. Can anyone help?! Thanks!!!

That had better be a decent sized budget.
  • It's fairly decent. The point is gaining knowledge about these guys too. So, the budget may be spent on a card, a book, or anything that has to do with that player. I'm not expecting to get a Babe Ruth American Caramel or anything. But, I recently posted a thread about a vintage find and it frustrated me to no end that I have zero knowledge of most of these players and their stuff. So, this coming years budget is going to be used for understanding and finding vintage stuff. I mean the Mantle rookie is out of the questions, but if I were to find a card with a player on it in okay condition and the price is right I might get it. Whereas in the past I would have just passed it up. That's why I need those who collect vintage to help me with names. I'm sure there are people that I can't even think of or don't know anything about. Thanks!

  • I'd suggest printing out a list of Hall of Fame inductees and delete the ones who do not meet your criteria (Tony Gwynn, Wade Boggs, etc.). That ought to give you around 150 players. It would take years to work through the list but will allow you to learn more about some obscure greats of the early game.

Why not turn the page a little on your collection and start collecting yellow hof plaques? You can get them extremely cheap, they're all HOFers, and they're easy on the eyes.

They're just nice to look at and you can get HOF players on a decent budget. Also they tell a little bit about the guy's career so you could learn a little too. Once you know a little more about each player you can decide who you want to spend your time and money on.

No real investment potential but you don't have that with off-grade cards either.

Agree with both of these statements.

Getting these guys in virtually any grade and almost any pre-war set would be challenging and rewarding.

    Good start.....
