What do you think about this one... <small giveaway included> Winner in the first post!

I'm so psyched about finally capturing one of my favorite War of Independence pieces exactly the way I wanted it that I am giving away "another piece of 8" to celebrate! Rules are simple - post in this thread to have your name added to the hat. On Sunday night I will pick a winner.

*** WINNER SELECTED *** - rah1959 - *** WINNER SELECTED ***

Here's the one that reminds me why I love the War of Independence series every time I look at it (what do you see?):

Looks like it's struck over clashed, rusted dies that were off-center when they clashed.

There is a LOT of character and texture and complexity in that ol' hunk o' silver. Must have been verrrry difficult to photograph just right....

    Great ideas, everyone!

    Here's some food for though:

With a die clash the "8R" would have been raised, not incuse... or would it? image

Also, that's not corrosion you're seeing... or is it? image

without looking at any other responses, the overall "humanity" of the coin strikes me, defintely a piece produced by the human "hand" (ok, machine, but there was a hand behind it) with what some might call imperfections but which really tell a story and just excudes personality and charm, gives you a direct connection with the people of the time of the coin itself. (unlike todays perfect reproductions and sterile designs)

or maybe Im just in a romantic mood image
technically, my eye wouldn't go away from the chin on the ob, except to check out the edge imprints influencing the entire coin

    Lovely but puzzling piece
At first I too thought it looked like it's struck over clashed, rusted dies that were off-center when they clashed.
Then I thought maybe its an off centre brockage which has been struck over again (off centre also). As for the pitting I would also go with rusty dies and the die s seem to be hand cut.

    Edited to say:
    I haven't got any 8R's yet so,
    Thanks for the chance! image

and the brockage theory is probably wrong as there is some underlying legend on the reverse as well. So I'm quite stomped. image

I see a coin that couldn't get out of the way fast enough, or tried too soon as well as maybe having been on top or under the next coin coming through. Great giveaway by the way.

Very cool give-a-way and very cool coin! It looks like another coin was struck on this one before it was struck itself with some pretty hammered dies. These are the things that interested me and got me started on 8 reales before I came to my senses and decided to stick to my nice simple German collection~

I guess I'll have to go and dig mine out again and decide what to do with them. Trade or sell for more German stuff most likely!

PS-That is not exactly a small give-a-way, That is a pretty big chunk of silver there!

Struck on an off-center brockage, which was struck on a cast planchet.

And I'll pass on the Potosi 8R. Just put me at the top of the list when you're ready to give away the (1813/2?) Guadalajara!
