MY OPINION FOR LINCOLN REGISTRY

As a Lincoln Cent collector solely, I would like to give my opinion of what coins should be in the Registry. First, I would suggest four basic sets as currently but with a slight change for proof dates.
1909-1958 Wheat Cents
1909-1958 Wheat Proof Cents
1959-2002 Memorial Cents
1959-2002 Memorial Proof Cents
Second, I would add a Major Varities Error set.
1909-2002 Major Varieties Error Wheat and Memorial Cents
Finally, I would add a Complete Lincoln Cent Registry that would contain ALL the coins listed above.
The basic sets would contain all date and mint-mark. The varieties and major error set would contain all of the following:
1909 S over Horizontal S
1922 No D Strong Reverse
1936 Proof (Satin OR Brilliant)
1944 D over S (Type 1 OR Type 2)
1955 Doubled Die
1960 Small Date Philadelphia
1960 Small Date Denver
1960 Small Date Proof
1970 Small Date San Francisco
1970 Small Date Proof
1972 Doubled Die
1982 Small Date copper
1982 Small Date zinc
1982d Small Date zinc
1982 Large Date zinc
1982d Large Date zinc
1983 Reverse Doubled Die
1984 Doubled Die
1990 No S Proof
1995 Doubled Die
These are 20 Varieties and Major Errors that most Lincoln Cent collectors have or would like to have. I have not included some very rare coins like the 1917 Doubled Die or some of the hundreds of miscellaneous varities in the Wexler and Flynn books. I have also not included separate coins for the type 1 and type 2 mint marks of 1979 and 1981. That 1981 Type 2 might be one to include. Perhaps a second varieties registry could be included for those coins.
The SMS coins of 1965 thru 1967 would be included in the basic proof set although some might object. If so, they could be in the Varities.
The basic proof set would contain either the satin or brilliant 1936 proof. Some might argue for including both the 1944 D over S varities, or excluding both. That's what makes this hobby so interesting.
Now, the important question for all you Lincoln Cent Registry members.
WHAT DO YOU THINK????
Thanks for reading.

If you look back at some of BJ's posts, you'll see the Sets you mentioned first will be a reality soon.
Registry 1909-1958 Proof Lincolns
I think your nice summary of what you'd like to see in the way of Lincoln registry is something I basically agree with. I especially like the idea of an overall Lincoln set, which will be particularly interesting as we approach the 100th anniversery of the set in 2008.
An issue would be how you weight the coins in the individual sets, if at all, in order to combine them.
As to which varieties should be included, PCGS should set a threshold for inclusion – e.g., when 25 or more coins in a variety have been slabbed, only then include the variety in the set, and not before. This is an idea that has been posted by a couple of people on the message board.
You list the 1982 varieties – a first step, however, would have be to have PCGS recognize these varieties.
Anyway, good thinking.

One thing I wondered, what if the varities stayed as part of the "normal sets" and you could click to see your rank / rating with and without the varities. I.e. you may be #9 in the Lincoln 09-58 series without varities and #7 (or #12) with the varities.
I think if PCGS stars to play the variety game, they have no choice but to recognize the 82 varities, how could they not do it?

First and foremost I think that they should "fix" the proof sets to get the wheats in one set. Think it is going to bother a few people, but it makes sense.
