Basic Player Sets - Leaf Cards???

When did Leaf cards become part of the Basic Player sets? I have had the number 1 Steve Carlton set on the registry for some time and all of a sudden the 1984 and 1986 Leaf cards showed up on the Registry? I have them both so no big deal, but how does this happen?
Always buying high grade Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton cards!!!
