What to do with a fake Trade Dollar?

I bought several Morgan Dollars and one 1875-CC Trade Dollar in a deal a few months back. I mostly collect Morgans, but the Trade Dollar looks great and even weighs correctly. It has no die casting marks or tooling, so it seemed authentic to me. I ended up selling on Ebay and the buyer emailed back 45 days later said it was counterfiet (by ICG grading) and wanted his money back. Got the coin back and sent his money. I just tried to sell it on Ebay again with the ICG flip showing it is "questionable authenticity" and they still kicked it off. I am not trying to sell a fake coin as a authentic coin, I am just trying to get rid of it. My question is what to do with it. 1. scratch "COPY" on the back and sell as a reproduction. 2. Keep it as an conversation piece. 3. Throw it in the garbage can, so others don't try to sell as real. 4. Make some type of jewelry out of it.

Any comments?

Keep it, study it, determine why it's counterfeit, and keep it for research purposes to help determining authenticity of future purchases.

I'm casually (not actively) working on a set of contemporary fakes..... Without checking, I know I need all the cc's...... If you're asking price is reasonable, I'd be interested...... PM me if you like...... Your's is off......
  • Why not keep it? ( or, does ICG have a guarantee as to the authenticity of their grading)

Use it as a reminder and as others have said, study it and learn what to look for as far as counterfeits go.

I'm sure that a lot of collectos have received counterfeits (they may not want to admit it though). It will make a good conversation piece!!

    Bruce

(my mistake, I thought it had actually been graded by ICG)

Still worth keeping IMO even as a reminder of how careful you have to be when buying coins.

    I second that opinion.

I bought a darkside proof coin a while back, which I sold on eBay. Several weeks later, the buyer emailed and asked to return it because one of the eBay approved TPGs wouldn't certify it as a proof. Received the coin back, and made a refund. Next big show I attended, I took the coin with me and showed it around, soliciting opinions. Three out of three dealers with expertise in the area agreed that the coin was indeed a proof, and one of those dealers paid me nearly three times what I originally sold it on eBay for (and over twice the current catalog value).

    Get a second opinion.

Ok ok....I'll help ya out....send it to me image
Seriously (well, if you don't want to send it to me...that is still choice #1), then go the 2nd opinion route.....maybe at a show if you go to any of the major shows.
Maybe ask TradeDollarNut or MarkFeld if they would be nice enough, if you sent it to them, if they could tell you why it is fake (maybe a good picture would do....).

Post a pic here, let people see if they know.

Post a pic here. That will get you a second opinion. If fake there are many here interested in it for educational purposes. I would be but every time I've mentioned that to the owner of one of these fakes he gets back to me that someone has offered much more than I did.

Please remember that I usually don't fool with raw Trade Dollars. Even the person that bought this must have thought it was real to send off to ICG. Looked like a good XF 45 to AU 50.

Yes, keep it for reference. Please take note of the placement of the CC. It is too far right. The CC is also
the wrong font or style. The two D's in trade dollar are poorly made and slightly different. Those are just
three "ifs" that show on the reverse. The obverse has too small denticles and not properly spaced or separated.

What really upsets me more is the weight. you say that it weighed just over 27 grams? That's scarry.

    Damn chinks,

I was in a shop today and saw that he had some trade dollars and ask if I can look at them. All of his CC where Fake and I did not know how to tell him that they were fake, so I said to him the five CC don't look right and he looked at me and said you are the 2nd one that said that and pulled them off. Must be a lot of this junk going around. image

    Hoard the keys.

I thought about this last night. Bad idea and it was late. Collect good fake reproductions and have a lucite toliet seat made from them image

I don't like the ebay pic, but I am far from expert on the series.
Did you give it a sound test, to make sure it was silver?

It looks pretty fake to me. The CC configuration is one that I've seen before (on other fakes) and is not a valid one that I'm aware of for a 75-CC. I'd have to take a closer look but the way that the neck feathers on a left side look a little sketchy as well. Post a better picture and I or we could probably be more conclusive.

I don't think its the real deal either, sorry. Dosn't have the right look,
    especially on the denticles, they seem misplaced. But what do I know;
heed the other's advice and get a second opinion. Good luck.

If you really want to sell the coin, put it on the BST and link this thread. Someone will want it for melt if nothing else. Otherwise, get it put into a money clip as jewelry. That way you have the best of two worlds, a money clip with a "Trade Dollar" and you will not have ruined a real coin to do it.
