Is this really "authenticated" by NGC?

I am seeing a few of these float through eBay lately, and I question the truthfulness of the auctions. If I am not mistaken, a NGC bodybag it does not infer that it is authentic, correct?

  • If the coin is not genuine, I believe that they will specify that on the body bag, above everything else. So, assuming that the coin pictured was the one that was sent in and it was BBed for repairs, I think that means it is still authentic.

I am assuming that a buyer would not have legal recourse to return the coin to NGC as a fake since it was bodybagged.

The 1908 from the same seller is one hell of a tough date. I doubt 3 have come across eBay in the last 6 years.

  • I would agree. NGC has no clue if this coin was the same that they BBed as repaired or a substitute. It isn't slabbed, so there just isn't any way to prove that it is the same coin.

NGC would be liable only if the seller sends this coin to NCS to be encapsulated. NGC has determined that the (submitted) coin (not necessarily the one in auction) is genuine and can be certified by NCS. If I were the buyer then would ask the seller to send it to NCS first.

NGC has some "out of the ordinary" size slabs for multi-coin holdering...

PCGS says if it's BB for any reason Cleaned repaired etc , it's genuine....I believe NGC is the same way

The issue remains, though, that a body bag is not the same guarantee as encapsulation.

That coin could well be a counterfeit for all we know. It's the same principle as selling a cracked out coin and using the insert.. could be legit, but it is ultimately a matter of trust.

If I were NGC I would be leery of this, lest it become a trend.

Plus I'm sure it would be easier to counterfeit the BB insert than it is to fake the whole slab.. a poor man's scam.

For what it's worth, I submitted a gold coin that was returned by PCGS as altered, and then had it resubmitted later and it was returned as not genuine.
  • bodybags are not sealed so there is no telling if the coin that is trying to be sold is the same one that NGC looked at...

also, I believe that someone asked David Hall on the question and answer board if the no-grade guaranteed that the coin was authentic and he said it did not... can't find the thread but I am looking...

Does anybody follow these bids? The 1725 rouble in the original link is up to $3500 with over a day to go. I guess the russian market still has running legs.
