Huge Vintage find...need help...UPDATE!!!!

Okay, today I was at a festival with my family. HUGE, and I mean HUGE vintage find!!! Stuff dating all the way back to the turn of the 20th century. Joe Jackson, The Babe, Lou Gehrig, Berra, Cobb, etc. This is what I need. I'm going back this week and I'm not sure what I'm doing. Is there anyone that I could send instant photo's to from my cell phone that would be willing to help? Or, if I can't get a signal, is there anyway I can tell the difference between something that looks old, but isn't and something that's of real value. I know this is broad, but my dad is coming and is willing to drop a load of cash on stuff, but only if he and I know it's legit. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • This guy doesn't want to sell you a T206 Wagner that he found in the ceiling does he?

    GOOD LUCK!

Rather than being really vauge and generic, it would kinda help if you were a tad more specific.

    T-206? Goudeys? What?

  • It was one of these two...the Jackson that is...there was also a B18 on a plaque and tons of other stuff. I found a vintage Man from UNCLE hardback book.

  • I'm sorry...I think that's the blankets? I'm sorry guys, I don't really collect vintage, so I don't really know all the names. But certainly, if this was the real deal it be a great doorway into collecting vintage. There were old Goudey packages, a Yoohoo Yogi Berra ad, a Ruth card, an ad with Ty Cobb on it...it just blew my mind. I wish one of you guys could come a long.
  • I'd check out the net54 board. There is a ton of vintage info there if you are not familiar with it. Lots of scans too so you can see what some of this stuff looks like. I don't really dig the attitude of the board so I'll never post on it but it's definitely a great resource for vintage.

I second that. This is not the place to be asking about pre-war cards, esp. more of obscure issues. Do you know where to find the Net54 board?
  • yes, I found it, but I couldn't find anything about Joe Jackson on there. SHI* I should have taken a picture with my phone.
  • the guy said he wanted 175 for the jackson card.

    Did you ask?

You should join and post a thread over there.

Just as a word of caution: take your time and proof read the post. Have it well thought out and very specific.

In other words, help them help you.

I'm willing to bet you get answers from some reputable and knowledgeable posters.

  • Guru, that's a 1916 M101-4 and "possibly" a 1916-17 E135 Jackson depending on the back. (It could also be a bread card "D" or a Store "H" designation.) The same images were used for many different issues back then.

The M101-4s are highly counterfeited, but the E135 (Collins-McCarthy candy) are not, but could easily be reprinted on todays laser copiers. I have a copy on my site -below in the Joe Jax section. Good luck

  • Is there a way I can feel the paper to tell if it's fake or is there something on there that might be noticable?
  • Try to get the guy to send them in to be graded -on your dime. Show him a copy of this thread. Many honest folks have sold early reprints believing they were authentic, but got burned once the buyer had them sent for authentication.

My only advice to you is "Take a deep Breath" and "Take you time" with this find. As others have stated it could be a box of couterfeit/fake cards.... often times excitment gets the best of us when $$$$$$ start moving through are heads...

Go get a black light from Home Depot or Lowe's or wherever, cost about $10.

In the middle of the 20th century, in the 1940s I think, paper manufacturers started putting phosphors in paper to make the whiter. When you shine a black light on older papers, they don't "sparkle" while papers made after the 1940s light up like an Xmas tree. That will tell you right away if the cards are printed after that date.
  • what exactly is a "festival"? A "huge vintage find" at a festival??

finding a huge amount of vintage cards at a "festival" would raise at least one of my eyebrows.

I would post a scan (from a digital photo, not cell phone) of the Jackson card (front and back) as well as the Goudey "package" (I assume you mean wrapper?). That would be a good start. You would get a lot of quick opinions and depending on where you live, I bet someone on this board would be happy to join you on your quest.

I am guessing that most real Joe Jackson cards are worth far more than $175.

  • It's called a festival, but really it's a giant outdoor flea market/antique sale. And you're correct, being someone that does really collect vintage, it's easy to get overly excited about something like this. I'm hoping to get out there sometime in the next couple of days to take some pictures. Then I'll post here. The guy said he's a collector and has been for a long time. He won an auction for all the stuff not too long ago. He also has a ton of Barry Bonds 86 Topps cards for sale at a pretty high price. So, it threw me off for a minute. The festival lasts all week and he's kinda back in a spot that's not to noticable. So, I'm hoping some of the stuff is still there.
This morning I had a sinking feeling in my stomach about the whole thing. So, before I shell out cash, I'll come here for more info.

If they guy knows enough to price Bary Bonds RC's high right now then he knows enough to find out if these are fakes. I am sure if they were real he would not flip a Joe Jackson for $175. If you really think he has something legit get his contact info from him and then find the people in charge of the flea market to confirm his contact info. Also agree to buy only on the condition that if it comes back fake you can get a refund from him. I bought a fake Gretzky RC (don't know much about Hockey) and tracked the guy down by the show promoter and basically used that as a threat. Most promoters don't wan't people ripping off customers as it's bad for buisness. This promoter told him to give a refund or he wouldn't be allowed to set up at his shows.

I would make sure you really know what you have or don't have being putting out any money.

here is a web site providing authenticity info on older cards.

My guess is that this "collector" knows exactly what he has or does not have.... Be careful
  • The more I think about this the less and less I'm wanting to go back now. I can't go today because of the rain. Parking is a huge field and I don't really want to get my car stuck in the mud. I just don't know enough about this stuff to feel confident in buying. It's an hour away too. So, I'd have to drive there, take pictures, come back home, get opinions and then drive back. Not to mention it's $5 to park there every time you go through the gate. I don't know if it's really worth it at this point.

Just like somebody else mentioned, because he knows how to price '86 Bonds cards, he then also knows how to price these cards. And if he doesn't, he at least knows that he may have a gold mine and needs to get expert help, which I am pretty sure he probably already has. Being a publicized festival, I'm sure you're not the first to spot these cards. Why would he overprice his Bonds cards, and severely underprice vintage stuff? If he thought the vintage was real, he would have overpriced them just like the Bonds.

Some of the early ads were reprinted. I don't know any specifics, but I know some were.

Yea, before some sucker beats you to it! LOL
  • So I went back out today with it being the last day hoping he might cut me some deals. I parked cars yesterday and made a boat load. I get up to his booth and I asked him if he still had the baseball stuff. He said it was gone. I asked him if someone bought all of it. He said no he had already packed it all up. I told him that I would make it worth his while to bring some of it back out. He looked at me and laughed. I then replied by saying to him that he must not need the money. He then asked me how much I was prepared to spend and I told him. He then told me I was crazy and that I was probably yanking his chain. I showed him the cash and he still wouldn't get the stuff out. I then responded with a question of its true value. He then asked me to leave his booth.

So, what should I make of this? I was very polite to him. I was prepared to drop a boat load of money for his stuff if it was the real deal. I even offered to pay to have some of the stuff certified like someone on here suggested. I just don't get it.
  • Sounds like it was a scam to begin with and I think you saved yourself a lot of headaches. Take half of your money and bet on the Indians tonight and take the other half and buy some legit stuff on eBay.
