Cool Coin 4 - Counterfeit 1855 $50 Wass Molitor

Short Version: Friend showed me his 1855 $50 Wass Molitor, what do you think?

Long Version: I take pictures for a local antique auction to put online. Today when I went, the auctioneer showed me 4 coins he said to "See what those computer friends of yours think". Didn't have the full coin picture equipment, but did the best with what I had. It weighs 23.10 grams and 356.5/356.6 grains. He didn't think this one was real, so when I told him I don't think he can retire on it, he wasn't too shocked. Were these heavily counterfeited?

Thanks,
Jeff

  • It appears contemperary, instead of a mdern fake. There is probably actually some collector's value to a contemperary counterfeit piece--that's the first such piece I've seen.
