What are Registry 'Points' costing you?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,116 ✭✭✭✭✭
The more advanced a Registry gets the more difficult it is to find that illusive coin that is needed for the upgrade. Some sets are more expensive than others once those low, single pop coins are being saught. How much is a single 'point' costing now in your set? Just a single upgrade (say, from an MS67 to an MS68)?
Are you at a point with your sets that the upgrades are almost impossible?
I love these Registry stories!

A single point increase in a reg set use to cost relatively little, perhaps a trip to burger king, or a couple less cigars, then it cost perhaps, a nice dinner out, or even a weekend at the beach or some jewelry for my wife.
Then, the next point cost the purchase of a second car. Couldn't afford the gas anyway, and we weren't going to the beach anymore, or the store, for that matter.
We grew our hair long and sold it for a point. We started growing our own food, on the apartment roof. Oh yea, a couple of points ago cost us our house.
I have my eye on something at the Heritage auction, but that's quite costly for another point in the registry. The last point cost me the first eye.
I'd continue with this story, but fedex is at the door, COD, and I get another point, but I have to give the guy my computer. image
Did I hear someone mention leasing? image
  • Kidneys are bringing good money on the black market. You only really need one anyways, and in my case it got me 3 registry points. I am trying to figure out how much impact only having one lung would have. Could be worth 5 or more points....... image

"point buying" is a tricky subject. Prices go up and prices go down. Now, Braddick mastered to trick of "point buying" by his display of patience and knowledge calculating that a coin such as a 2001(p) Kennedy Half in PCGS-MS68 was going to correct downward, at least in the short run (as supply outstrips demand). Result: Buying one at around 50% of the high. Waiting on moderns isn't always a guarantee of a price drop-consider the case of the NY(d) quarter in PCGS-MS67, which may have doubled or tripled in price on those who decided to wait for one. With classic commems, like Registrycoin is pursuing, it is even trickier to calculate. Wait for a pop 1 to become pop 2?? Good luck!!

But, no question, the burden of an advanced set is the need to pay big $$ for upgrades. But, it really has nothing to do with "registry points" for most folks. Take Steve's Commem set, he wouldn't have to buy another coin for 3-5 years and still likely maintain the #1 spot with a nice cushion!! The real question should be "What is your love of coins costing you" image Wondercoin.

That MS68 Kennedy also fits into two Registries- one Kennedy and the Modern Type, so that 'point buying' becomes even more economical.

-Now, does anyone have a PCGS MS68 1976-S Kennedy for sale?
