Sometimes it's nice to have a deadbeat bidder

I sold several cards on eBay that ended last Friday night. One card in particular, 1974 Topps Nolan Ryan PSA 7, went for only $8.30 and I thought it should have gone for more. It is a high end 7 with very nice centering. My auction descriptions state that payment must be received within 7 days, otherwise the item will be re-listed. Today is the 8th day and I have not received payment. This is one of those cases where I will just let it go and I am glad that it was not paid for because I think I can get more money for it. I will get a final value fee credit from eBay and might crack it out and sell it raw (I don't think the 7 does it justice) or I may just hold on to it. Has anybody else here ever sold something on eBay and was happy that payment was not made because they felt it should have gone for more?

Is there a specific reason that your insurance rates are higher than the post office's insurance rates? Actually your rates are lower up to $50 worth of coverage, but then they are all higher after that.
  • Nick,

You are right. I thought I was charging actual USPS rates. I went to USPS.com and found out otherwise. At one point, these were USPS rates (because that's where I got them from), but I guess I need to update that. Thanks!
  • I'm thinking... if the buyer has mailed payment, you'll have to send the card.

Your instructions seem specific to Pay Pal???

    Just a thought. image

"I ONLY accept PayPal from buyers with a confirmed address and payment must be received within 7 days of auction end or I will relist the item! No Exceptions! Again, if you are paying by PayPal and you send payment from an unconfirmed address, payment will be refunded and the item will be re-listed. Please check my perfect feedback and bid with confidence!"
  • Yeah, you need to be careful. I have found that some buyers will send checks or MOs and not mark the item as "Payment Sent".
#10 PSA Set for Topps Baseball currently on eBay under seller deeppurple1.

Yeah, much like your situation, the winning bidder never responded for a 1976 Ryan, PSA-9 o/c won for only $12. But I went ahead and filed a NPB against the deadbeat anyway in order to crucify them, leave a negative and to get my final value fees back and two days later they were NARUd

  • try having your auctions not end on a Friday.

I usually have my auctions end on Sunday night, but I have been experimenting with ending dates/times. My theory behind having it end on Friday night is that there aren't many people home at that time, and maybe the bidders that were interested in it would set higher snipes in hopes of winning the cards and I would maximize my sales. I don't think it worked!

Don't forget Monday was a postal holiday. I and everyone I know had to go to work that day, but the postal workers didn't. The payment may not have hit the PO until Tuesday.

If you get a check tomorrow or Tuesday - even Wednesday - you should send the card. SMR on the Ryan is only $22, and as a seller I consider 1/2 SMR my base - so IMO you're worried about $2.50.

No fuss with Ebay and a buyer is worth $2.50

BTW that card is one of my faves - staring down the barrel of Nolan Ryan's fast ball.
