Feeling Threatened on the Modern MS Type Set

Mommy Mommy (PCGS) make them stop improving their sets. I'm already down to number 5, and there are other others still coming. Their gunning for me I know it. Upgraded, added, updated, I hear these words in the dark of night. Please let me pedigree before I'm forever bannished from the front page. I've been a good boy and spent thousands in grading fees. JUST MAKE THEM STOP! I promise to spend more this year.

Brian, I figure if I can add a MS68 40% silver Ike, a MS68 State quarter and improve the 1976 clad Kennedy to MS67 and then bump one or more of the easy MS69 gold/plat. coins to MS70- I'd be there.
This set is a priority in 2002.
I didn't like dropping out of the top five! It was a wakeup call to stop being lazy with this set.

    Pat,
The trouble is Bartdog coming up fast....with a 67.75 and just a 76 Kennedy to reach 100%. He could buy my cheap MS64 and beat us!

If you get your 4 upgrades, you'll pass me. I don't expect to do much more on this after my 2001 surge.

  • So... Brian/Pat, either have a 76 CLAD Kennedy you want to sell? image All my LIMITED resources are being applied to this set so I have made good strides recently. I figure I have done everything I can with my MS IKE set as prices have gotten too crazy, and five very nice NGC FBL Franklins cross-overs were lost by USPS in September so that set is being slowly dismantled.

This is a nice looking short set of coins in high grades don't you think? Oh, by the way Brian, just upgraded the $ Commem to MS70 - won't post for a bit though. image

    Bartdog,
That upgrades don't matter... you're too far ahead of me grade wise. It's that last coin that brings you to 100% that will do me in. I've e-mailed PCGS asking if I can pedigree now. They said sometime in 2002... Today is sometime in 2002.

  • Brian,

I know the feeling. Hoyt is creeping quickly on me and Dennis and High are both distancing. If you want to send me a small bribe, I'll block Bartdog and Braddick from my auctions the next time I sell any upgraded piece on E-Bay. image

    - 1972-S Silver Ike, PCGS MS68 just purchased off of eBay last night (BIN). One down- four upgrades to go. . .

  • Pat,

I can think of probably 4 or 5 more coins that you could use that are becoming way too easy to find right now as well. I don't think adding will be difficult right now if you have the funds. A lot of highest graded 2001 pieces being dumped on the market right now makes this a buyer's market.

You're right. In one day on eBay I saw: A 2001 MS67FS Jefferson (all of these are PCGS coins). A MS68 State quarter for a BIN of under $150.00. A 1976-s Kennedy in MS68. A 1976-s Washington in MS68. Also a MS69 1999 Lincoln (described as having a slight pinkish stain) for under $200.00 BIN.
That's just one day. Five instant upgrades. The 1972-S MS68 Ike I did buy (using the BIN).

You know what IS a tough coin? One I've NEVER seen offered on eBay?
A 1976 CLAD Kennedy in MS67. And, it's not a single pop coin either.
    Where are they?

  • Don't forget the 2001-P Kennedy also with a BIN under $200 now. I have seen 3 76 Kennedy's in MS-67, ranging in price from about $400 (light haze) to $600. All three were offered by Barlow over the last year. Hoyt got one and I got one as well. The pops on these pieces are as low as the 1964 Kennedy's, and being a different type, are in as high a demand. It wouldn't suprise me if the pops are slightly high from having some crackouts resubmitted as well.

Looking at the top 5 Kennedy sets and some of the highest MS Modern set, assume High Desert has 1, assume Dennis has 1, I have 1, Goya collection has 1, Hoyt has 1, Richard Green has 2. That's 7 coins accounted for out of 25 graded for the type.

Upgrading is a lot easier if you aren't concerned with price... being for sale and being easily attainable are two different things!

  • Brian,

Upgrading consists of three things, availability of the piece in question, funds available to purchase the piece in question, and luck, because the first two never seem to happen at the same time. image

Just think how much more I could have upgraded if I had been more patient. Many of my 2001 pieces were purchased at prices consistent with the much lower populaitons. After some of the populations exploded, the prices dropped in half. I think in many cases, they are undervalued right now and shouldn't be this low regardless, but that doesn't stop me from kicking myself either.

You're right about the low BIN on eBay for the 2001 MS68 Kennedy. Mitch had a better price- I went with him.
