Mercury Collectors

I just got back from the FUN show and, contrary to my expectations, I purchased 2 Mercury dimes. (One was from Stephen Stokely's collection, the second discard from his collection to enter mine. I hope he keeps up-grading his set because the two of his coins I have are wonderful!)So, PTVETTER (Pat) now has my permission to add two (2) coins to his collection. Indeed, anyone behind now has permission to add two more coins! BUT, the rest of you guys who are so far in front of me--Fairlaneman (Ken) and Python1 (Dennis) among sooooooo many others--anyway, you guys have NO permission to add anything. In fact, I bet Pat and I are more than willing to give you permission to delete a few coins!!

Mark and Ray: Real Envious of you guys that get to attend a big show like FUN. Being from the sticks out here in Oregon nothing,or even close to,like the FUN Show is put on. Did you happen to look at the Kritzman Collection ? Ended up being the High Bidder on one of the Lots. Doubt if it will stand up. Dennis added his 24S Merc which should have put him back ahead of me in the Registry but it did not. Actually his set rating Fell, something has got to be Goofed Up there. Mark what were the Dimes you picked up ? are you going to keep us in Suspense ? Ray have a nice time at the show and Please give us guys out in the Sticks a report.image Take Care and Mercs Rule.image Ken

While we are talking Mercurys here, what is everyone's opinion on requiring the varieties in the set? Personally, I prefer them to be optional. I know they have been accepted for a long time, but I still dont think they should be required.

I will shut up and go away on this if everyone else thinks they should be required. The set is difficult enough without adding at least two more key coins.

    Thoughts, opinions, or other comments?

I agree with most.Just leave it the way it is(optional).I can just see a big mess coming from this as in the all varities/errors in different sets. Can you amagen putting together a set of Morgans and all Vams?
Don't you think if they do add varities it would be for all set's?(across the board).Only people i see benefiting would be dealers who could not move these so called varieties in years. If it must be than just the extreme ones that hold there valuIE;55 dbl die,72 dbl die (as a sample)
Opening up a can of worms sorta speak, and may chase away collectors.Only my opinion and it may be all wrong.Al

    Pat:

Kindly knock off this nonsense of adding several coins at once! Take mercy on an old collector!

Re varieties: I'm torn both ways. I think the 42/41 and perhaps even the 45 Micro S have been long recognized. But, in truth, I was planning to consider my set complete without either of these varieties.

Re the coins I added: I first purchased a 45-D. I think it's a nice coin, but certainly nothing to write home about. Then my wife and two kids left to go to another booth to buy Beany Babies. I stayed put and continued to talk to Mike at Larry Whitlow's table. But there was this 31-S dime that kept interupting the conversation by calling my name. All I can say is that those Beany Babies were a really expensive purchase. (At least, expensive for me. It's probably less than the tax that High Desert and Registry Coin have paid on some of their purchases!)

I don't think that verities should be required for the set!!! NO way! The 1945-S micro S may have some merit. I'm not sure about that one. I'm sending 3 dimes in to PCGS this week. Will keep updating with news.

  • Mark, congrats on the new dimes, love to see so much activity with our group (I hope that is not being to presumptious) saying "our group". I was going to be at the show, but a few personal problems prevented that, sorry I will miss meeting you guys.

Ken, just got off the phone with Gail, she had to go in and recalculate the set, she was a very nice lady to talk to. I found that problem to be strange as well, she had no explanation for it either. Oh, well...its correct now.image

Deep coin, I too, believe that they should leave the set just the way it is now, and if they dont, I still will not upgrade the micro, or the 42/1's that are in the set now, I just like to have them.

To all: I did ask the question to Gail, Will PCGS consider listing in the registry book in the 2002 series book, the Top 20 or maybe even the Top 10 instead of the top 5 only, she told me that if enough email was sent to them, making this request, it would be a very good possibility.
I feel this way, as fast as this is growing, it would stay alive, with many more people not be giving up the ship before they were recognized in some way, and maybe many more would try. Just a thought of mine, I am including this in my email to them.

I hope that all to have a great weekend!image

Hello: If PCGS trys to keep up with the Jones the 42/41,42/41D and the micro s will be added to the set. NGC has all three in thier Registry Set. I personally hope they just leave the set alone, might concede if they were to only add the Micro s. But then what about some of the other varities 28 Large and small S,type 16 and type 17 in all three mints for 1917,and also the 31D double die. Guess what I am trying to say is "Stay with the Traditional Set" as stated before putting the set together is quite a challenge as it is. On to PCGS. My FIRST experience with them ended up just fine IMO. Join the Collectors Club 2 Weeks ago and got the Packet today. Needless to say 4 of my coins are in the mail already heading for PCGS for a Cross Over attempt. If the four I sent dont cross more than likely I will not try again. The four coins were all early dates so I know they will be scruntized well by PCGS. The Dates are: 1917D in a NGC MS64FB holder, 1918D in a ANACS 64 Holder, 1919S in a NGC 64 holder(And One of my Favorites) and a 1920S in a NGC 64 holder. Those four coins are every bit as good as my PCGS 64 coins. Well this was Much Rambling for me.image Certainly hope Bordom did not set in.image Take Care,Have Fun and Adolph's Little Lady RULES.image With ME atleast. Ken

Thanks for the input about the varieties. I hope everyone expressed the same opinion in the survey. Perhaps if we all stick together they will keep them as optional.

I just received my L & C catalog and there was a long list of varieties that I was unaware of. I have not focused on the minor varieties or researched them. I guess I should spend some time on them, but they really are not my area of interest.

Fairlaneman, I also just joined the PCGS club, so I have three more coins going in for certification. They are 20P, 20D and 20S that were bought before I knew what I was doing, so we shall see how they grade out. Of course the are No Bands.... and that will forever make me a no threat, but I truely enjoy this series and everyone here. Wow, everyone is upgrading their set, it is rather catching guess.
