The latest SCD renewal letter, is it worth $27.98 a year?

They sure don't give up on renewal letters. You can see the letter below. You'll be armed with "uncommon insight" if you subscribe! Who needs to spend hours online, pointing, clicking and scrolling.

Does anyone think it has any of the big benefits listed? Expert collection advice. Auction Bidding tips, techniques and strategies.

The last issue I saw was in, I think Jan 06, and it was 60-70 pages, if that (with coaches corner, fritsch or mr mint 25% of that!).

I want to see them do well, but I dont think they'll ever win on price.

What do you think of their letter?

    worthless.
Save the money, read this board and Net 54, and you've got more info in a day than they have in a year.
Tough to take any publication seriously that continues to run Coach's Corner ads.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

I got one of those today, but it also has:
    AM/FM Portable Radio FREE

    in the list of "benefits"

The PS from TS O'Connell on mine reads:
Others gladly pay....an issue. Plus, don't forget about your FREE AM/FM Portable Radio....

I know there's some science/art/witchcraft to marketing, but I find this pretty humorous.

I think you should call TS and ask him why you weren't offered the free radio.
  • Hahaha...

A free radio? Of course I need a radio when I'm collecting cards. How about some foot slippers to go along with it?

At their current rate, the price will be down to zero in another year or two. Or they'll be paying you to subscibe.

Does anyone in america still pay $4.99 retail for an issue?

In the last few months I was able to pick up the two baseball related 1963 Topps Famous American Baseball Stamps ( Ruth and Gehrig), 3 of the 1960 Topps baseball Hot Iron Transfers ( the send aways from the Hot Iron Transfers pack insert), a couple of 1959 Topps baseball Felt Pennants ( the send aways from the Felt Pennant pack insert) from SCD ads. Previously I was able to get leads on some 67 Topps Punch Outs and the pretty rare Standups from the same year ( not the 64s) from SCD ads. Also found some of the extention cards in the 71 Fleer World Series set.

I do not get SCD for the articles, but some of the above items rarely if ever show up on ebay and the people I got them from don't sell there .I agree that depending on what your collecting interests are it may be useless. It has worked for well me for the amount involved
    Topps Baseball-1948, 1951 to 2017
    Bowman Baseball -1948-1955
    Fleer Baseball-1923, 1959-2007

I no longer subscribe but for 28 bucks?

Heck, I can't go around the corner without spending that...

It was the cornerstone of our hobby for years - I guess I'm kind of a sap - I hate to see an icon totally go up in flames.

I still - fondly - remember how I couldn't wait for it to come out! The same way I felt waiting for the next month's edition of Superman!

There was no internet, no ebay - and it was "the" way we communicated - very quaint - don't ya think.

So, for 50 cents a week? I just may have to give them another chance. I was a continuous subscriber from 1990 to 2006.

    Great pickups Al.

SCD may still have a little life left in it after all!

50 Cents an issue is worth it. That is pretty cheap. Every couple of months there is an article that makes it worth the money. Also, you can get some great deals from Coaches Corner.

On the more professional side, Kevin Savage runs acutions in there very frequently and it is the only place Polo Grounds advertises.

The sheer quantity of deceased HOF signed product that they sell for 10-20% of true market value....enough said.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Same offer here. No they aren't worth the $$$. You get a paper every week and would be only usefull if you collect vintage high end stuff. SCD was good when it was a small magazine years ago.

Speaking of former hobby cornerstones... what ever happened to Lud Denny of ProSet fame? I was bored one night and Googled his pudgy butt to no avail. Anyone know?

    Snorto~

Our we talking about the same SCD thats mentioned I see nothing in regards to New pricing cards etc and almost all the stuff mentioned. Thats false advertsing!!! All the magazine is Press releases concerning the advertisers auctions and results their of. Or articles about companies authenticating a certain unifrom or such. That place that runs those nice 10 page auctions I like the conflict of interest where the guy who writes their pr articles is one of their authenticatorsimage No conflict of interest theirimage. Cannot wait to see when they have to publish the postal form on how many subscriptions they have. When my FREE one runs out i will not be sending them a cent.

Plus delivery is all over the place most of the time late or not at all. Customer Service is weak as you can only miss 4 issues a year is all they will credit you for missing issues as wellimage

Wasn't Denny a huge guy? Like 350 lbs or something. There sure were some characters back then.

"Big Bob" was another one. Gigantic wholesaler that went kaput.

I think the only former hobby dealer I've googled was darren prince. He's a sports agent now, and married some hot, blonde australian model.
