Book on 8 Reales

What's the best book on 8 Reales? Is there a specialized book on the subject in english? What do you use for pricing? Grading?

  • Tom,

It depends on the type. For pillar dollars, I would recommend The Columnarios of Central and South America, by Gilboy.

The reference does not cover anything beyond the pillar types. For bust type 8 reales, there's a book by Calbetto, but the name is escaping me. Something like Compedium of Eight Reales - I don't think that's quite right.

Or, for later types, there are a few.

As Ricke mentioned, for portraits - Calbeto's "Compendio De Las Piezas De Ocho Reales", or also known as "Compendium VII Reales". Great reference for varieties, I use my 2 volumes almost every day.

Compendium is in both English and Spanish.

George Kolbe has a very fine set of Calbeto in his upcoming sale. It should bring $325 or so. It's well worth it.

Of course there's also Dunigan and Parker's "Resplandores", which covers the Cap and Rays series far better than anyone else has ever done.

I was going to suggest this one as well. I think it is terrific and highly recommend it for the Cap and Rays series
