1999 Sotheby's Barry Halper Collection Auction

I was looking through the catalog and final prices for the Halper Collection auction and was curious what some of these pieces would fetch on todays inflated market.Halper's collection is in my opinion just as impressive,if not more, than the Hall Of Fames. The amount of one of a kind items the man acquired is unreal. One of my favorite pieces was Babe Ruth's Dodgers jersey.I figure that it is his only Dodgers jersey in existence(sp?).What are your guys thoughts on this collection and what kind of prices would this collection bring today?

Many items fetched (very) premium prices at the time because of the Halper provenance -- and a significant number of lots that have since resold on the public markets have sold for less than they did in the Halper auction.

That said -- Halper was one of the coolest guys in the hobby. I loved meeting him, touring his place, and was so happy to acquire a few pieces for my collection in the sale.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Wow you got to tour his collection. That must have been amazing.I didn't mean if the items came up for sale again.I meant if the whole Halper collection was offered again. If you don't mind me asking what pieces did you pick up for your collection and how did you get the opportunity to to meet him and tour his collection?.
