OT: Cool Comic Book Story

I think we've all had this dream about a T206 Honus Wagner or '52 Mantle:

Batman Comic Book
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

20 years ago, guy walks up to my table at a Comic show. Opens a bag and has a Detective 30 (3rd Appearance of Batman) in about NM condtion. Long story short ,after 4 hours of negotiation he trades me for $3000 in my Retail sales price of comics ( probably had $200-300 into it) and $1000 cash. I called one of my big Comic Collector customers in Denver that Monday. That night he comes over and buys it for $7500.00 cash. That book now is worth approx. $75-100 K in that condition. If I'd only kept it !!!!!!

Wow, what a great find! It said in the article that the Action Comics #1 with Superman was the most valuable comic. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how much that is worth?

  • Good day,
I can't remember if it was the top condition Action #1 or the top condition Detective #27, but one of them sold in the last year or two for $1.3 million.

  • there is a BIG debate going on (in the comic collecting world) as to IF this was a "find" and the condition of the comic (many feel it is restored)...

Who knew that Batman had a rookie card?

I post this every now and then, but Mile High Comics has some incredible stories on their website. Check out the "Original Mile High Collection" and "Mile High II Collection" stories. They're long, but very well worth reading.

Oy. Sounds like the comic book world's version of the Wagner 8.

I thought restoring comics was more acceptable than restoring baseball cards. No?

I don't know. I do think, however, that many times it gets lost why high-grade vintage collectibles are worth so much. It's because they managed to stay high grade for all those years without being restored or altered. I just think that gets overlooked so often. It's not so much the item, but the improbability of it remaining in great shape for so long.

Yes, restoring comics is more acceptable than restoring baseball cards as long as it's disclosed. Hiding restoration on a valuable comic is a no-no since there's a huge price difference between restored vs. non-restored comics.

Restoring is more acceptable on comics, but still most would rather not have it, all else being equal. What's really annoying (go figure) is deceptive and unneeded restoration done to a comic, to try and change it from a "merely" brand-new appearance with a scuff or two, etc. to that of "perfect off the presses." Except it really isn't.

I think the story of him saving up for a moment just like this to come along seems ready made. I hope we get some detailed picts of it at least soon.
