EBAY has over 200,000 coins for sale at any given moment...
Why can't they hire some professional numismatic consultants to watch over their sales? I'm sure there are folks looking for work!
That way, when someone questions a listing or reports a coin as counterfeit, for example, they can pass these on to a group of professionals...
I would imagine that EBAY's volume alone would justify these hirings. In the long run, the more people feel confident in these
listings, the more people would buy.
Just my two cents

The problem is that your idea makes too much sense.

Counterfeits and similar major problems should have a quick report button on coin auctions. (Of course, some might end up listing them in other categories to circumvent that.) IMO, the ANA should make a service available to eBay, as a somewhat unique venue posing this problem on many coins, and respond as such an expert evaluator of such claims that appear to have a shred of credibility. This would also lend a margin of independence over directly hirring experts who, while on the eBay payroll, would be responsible for helping maintain eBay's business.

Russ, I was afraid someone would say that.
I know it would never happen, just trying to make the collecting world a better place, a little at a time
eBay is a public company and the bottomline is the bottomline. They need to demonstrate quarter over quarter growth to their investors. It's not evil, just the way it has to work to justify the price. To keep the business rolling along, they'll do what tey need to to make this profit optimal now and into the future. If XYZ self-slabbers are representing a lot of revenue for them, there will be hesitation to stop them unless it kills off other business to a greater detriment longer term or presents a possible legal or customer relations problem of sufficient magnitude. Their eyes are on the money.

Coxe, I know exactly what you are saying. I work for a public company myself & it all comes down to cash flow. I bet you EBAY wouldn't mind if the ANA people provided this service on a voluntary basis!!!
Thx for your comments, all...
