Grade & Advice on this 1927 St.G Double Eagle - Big Pics

StrikeOutXXXStrikeOutXXX Posts: 3,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
A co-worker/friend asked me the best thing to do with this coin of his. I'm not much into gold, so looking for grade opinions to see if slabbing it would help him out in the end.

Thanks!
Jeff

IMO, this coin's reverse is a little too hacked up for the coin to be worth slabbing for anything except assuring a potential future buyer of its authenticity. With gold prices where they are, I suppose that's enough of a reason.
  • StrikeOut, I'm not a gold expert but it looks XF to me. The wear spot on Liberty's forhead realy grabs my eye.

In any case nice coin and great pics......

Looks MS63 and would be worth slabbing.

I'd lean more towards AU. Looks like it's just a weak strike. Definitely some wear though.

Agreed. Still MS, even though you have some nasty stacking friction on Miss Liberty's forehead.

For some reason Miss Liberty's face on the Saints seems to attract a lot of hits.

I would vote MS 62 and worth slabbing.

Too bad about Ms. Liberty's face and those gouges on the Eagle - the coin is actually quite clean for even a 63 but if not for the fact that these detractions severe and in noticeable areas.

Even so, I think its a very nice coin!

Also, I forgot to add that '27 is a very common date and that PCGS is about as tough on these as they are on 81-S Morgans.
